Water heaters at the lake or cottage have the ability to either spring a leak in the spring or almost it seems some of the time spontaneously. Once you are certain (for sure) that there is no electric current whatsoever coming into the heater, then disconnect the wires that enter the heater. It never hurts to tag these wires on the old heater with colored tape or tags just in case you have to reverse your repair or need a model to refer to.

Similar to turning off the current to the water heater you now want to turn off the water coming into the water heater. Otherwise you will have a “flood”. As well it is very dangerous to work around electricity with loose water present. You have several choices.

You should easily find the tap for the input of water into the water heater. It will be the single cold water line in. Simply follow that cold water line that is flowing into the hot water heater. Not far along you will find a standard garden type water faucet. Close it (clockwise). Next to be on the absolutely safe side, shut off the main water tap that leads into your abode. It never hurts to play it safe and be redundant. Better safe than sorry.

You will have to drain the waste water from the water tank. You could leave it in.

However the water tank will be very very heavy and unwieldy to cart away. As well it will leak more come next spring, when it unthaws – wherever it is lying. Take a standard garden house, of proper length. Attach the end of the garden hose to the outflow of the water heater (close to the bottom and base of the tank), and drain the tank outside. The end outlet of the hose of course must be lower than the tank drain.

After the tank is empty and drained simply unscrew the water pipes of the hot water heater. To unscrew you will need a good strong wrench turned counter clockwise. The inlet pipe may be labeled “cold” and the outlet pipe “hot”.

Now all you have to do is “pull out” the heater. If you live in an earthquake prone regional location, you may find that your heater is “strapped in”. You will have to undo the straps. It is not unlike undoing a belt. However it may be heavier and may require the assistance of more than one person.

Now that your older, broken or leaking water heater is removed you will now have to do the reverse and install the newer device. It is basically the same procedure as removing the old one, only in reverse.

First the new water heater is placed in the same place as the first one. This is assuming that you do not want to change the location or plumbing. After all why make life more difficult than it need be.

Clean the pipes thoroughly before attaching them to the new water heater. A wire brush can do the trick easily.

Once you have the two pipes attached (cold one intake, hot one is output), you will need to fill up the tank with water. The trick is to empty the hot water of air at the same time as you fill it. Otherwise when the hot water is turned on, the air and water may gurgle out of the tap. Simply turn on both the water inlet tap (at the bottom of the tank) and at the same time run a hot water tap in a sink in your cottage or chalet. Just remember to turn off the tap when you are finished.

Lastly attach the electrical power wires to the tank. Just to make sure once more – check that the power breakers are in the off position. Ensure thoroughly that everything is dry in the area around the water heater. If you are unsure wait a day or so. With the breakers off and unpowered attach the electrical power cables to the water heater (exactly as they were before on the old tank). After that is done and checked turn on the breakers. It may take more than several hours to heat up the water fully, especially if the water is stone cold well water in the spring time.

You now have completed the procedure of replacing your electric water heater at your lake or cottage. Stand back and admire your handiwork. If you are leaving your retreat for a good time period, it might be a good idea to both turn off the water and power if you are going to be away for a good spell until your next return. * Familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood by visiting city & state websites. Inquire ahead of time about local food markets, dry cleaners, entertainment, shopping, restaurants, and in general try to get a feel of the place you will soon call home.
* File a change of address form with US Postal Service.
* Call your bank/credit card company and ask about changing/closing/moving your accounts.
* Close any accounts you will not be transferring (saving, checking, empty out safe deposit boxes, etc).
* Contact your family physician for medical records and possible referrals. Also call your Health Insurance Provider.
* Contact current children’s schools and arrange for transfer of student records.
* Make sure all library books have been returned and all dry cleaning/repaired or altered items have been picked up.

* Contact your utility providers and have your utilities such as phone, water, power, cable/ satellite etc. canceled - leave a gap of a day or two between move-out day and disconnection of service to allow for unforeseen delays in moving out.
* Cancel / transfer magazine and newspaper subscriptions.
* Create a "move file" to keep track of moving company estimates, receipts and other important information.

As studies have shown, long-term consumption of demineralized water poses a threat for our health.

You see, this kind of water tends to be acidic, having a pH lower than 7. This has two very harmful effects:

First, responding to the lowering of pH, our body tends to pull minerals from our teeth and bones to neutralize the acid. Thus, our body is gradually stripped from minerals that are essential for our well-being.

What's worse, scientists claim that cancer cells grow only in an acid environment. Therefore, long-term consumption of water without minerals will probably be responsible for cancer incidents.

Few things are as relaxing as dining by candlelight.  

And few things are as aptly called a rude awakening as finding the drippings on your carpet the next morning. But don't stress on this one. You can fix this annoying problem easily enough.

You'll need ice cubes, a plastic bag, a spatula or spoon, an iron, a few plain brown paper bags, dry cleaning fluid and a squirt of hand dishwashing liquid.

Put the ice cubes in the plastic bag and cover the spot until it hardens to the touch. Then gently scrape away the excess with your spatula or spoon. Repeat on each waxy spot on your carpet.

Now set your iron on low heat. Over the residue, place a brown paper bag without any writing or designs. (Any ink may transfer to the carpet, which would be even worse than dealing with leftovers and curdled reminders of lingering dinners past.)

Press the iron on the bag for no longer than a couple of seconds. Be sure to keep the iron heat on low so carpet fibers don't get scorched.   Or the bag.

Is it working? You'll know it is if you look under the bag and find a candle-colored smear of success.   Keep repeating and replacing the bags as necessary until there's no more transfer to your bag when heated. You're almost there.

Now blot the remaining blights (if you have any) with dry cleaning fluid. Sparingly, to prevent damage to carpet backing.   Resist the urge to substitute gasoline, lighter fluid or carbon tetrachloride for dry-cleaning fluid. These fire and breathing hazards aren't meant for indoor carpets.

Now blot with a solution of one-quarter teaspoon dishwashing liquid and one cup of warm water to remove all traces of cleaning fluids past. Rinse and blot dry. Now go enjoy a candlelight dinner! (But don't forget the dripless candles.)

They then follow the scent trail back to the colony and tell others to follow and come get food. The best way to stop this from happening is to destroy the scent trail. This way, these ants won’t be able to make it back to the colony to tell others of their find. There are lots of products you can sprinkle on the trail to make it impossible to find. Some suggestions are black pepper, talcum powder, cinnamon, or vinegar (just put it in a spray bottle). Just sprinkle or spray one of these substances on the ants and their track. You can watch them for a minute before you apply while they walk so you know their previous path. Make sure to get the path they have come from.

While it is important to get them out of the house, it’s just as important to keep the ants from coming back into the house. If you can find where they got into the house, apply whatever you’re using (pepper, talcum, etc) on their entrances as well. This will keep other ants from following the trail into your house. When they panic and try to get away, watch where they go; you may be able to find where they got in the house. There are other products you can apply at the entrances to keep the ants from coming in again, including the crushed bay leaves and cayenne pepper. You can also sprinkle these products, or the ones mentioned earlier, in cabinets and near food. This will keep the ants away from the food. Another idea to keep them out is to draw a line along the inside barrier of the house where ants come in. Ants generally won’t want to cross the line. These tactics will keep the ants from coming into the house or at least finding the food. If they don’t think food is available, they will stop looking there.

Along with these tactics you should try to seal your food as well as you can. Ants can sometimes get them into closed jars, so keep those in the fridge if need be. If these tactics don’t get rid of your ants, you can always buy ant poison. Just be sure to buy the right kind for the ants you have. If the correct taste isn’t used, the ants won’t eat it.

As a result, many septic systems fail unnecessarily.

The Price for Failure is Steep
The price for failure is steep in two way. More than 1200 people in the US die each year from contaminated water, and failing septic systems are a leading source of waterborne disease outbreaks in the country today. In a 2000 EPA report, 31 states listed septic systems as their second greatest potential source of groundwater contamination. Septic system replacement is also very expensive, with costs often running from $5,000 to $20,000 or more. Fortunately, there are some highly effective, ineffective steps you can take to eliminate this problem. Before discussing solutions, let's look at why septic systems fail.

Septic tank maintenance is actually pretty easy to understand. When a system fails, the tank itself doesn't fail- the drainfield soil fails. In most cases the soil fails when it gets plugged up with solids and won't allow liquid to pass through it. For example, it can get plugged with solids from the tank if the tank hasn't been pumped, or with lint from a washing machine. Now for your solutions:

1. Use a washing machine filter.

Did you know that washing machines are a leading cause of septic system failure? The primary culprit is lint generated by washing machines, which clogs the soil in drain fields. Did you know that a typical family washing machine produces enough lint each year to carpet and entire living room floor! Lint screens and nylon traps found in hardware stores trap 5% or less of these particles. Because they are so light and small, the lint particles do not settle out in the septic tank. Instead, they stay in suspension and are flushed out to the drain field, where they plug up the pores of the soil bed.

To compound the problem, much of our clothing is now manufactured with synthetic materials such as polyester and nylon. These substances are not biodegradable, and will not break down in a septic system. Instead, they accumulate and plug the soil. Once these materials enter the soil, there is no way to remove them.

The good news is that lint can be prevented from entering the septic system through the use of a reusable, inline filter which attaches to your washing machine discharge hose. The filter, called the Filtrol 160, retails for $139.95.

2. Avoid Excessive Water Use
You can also damage your septic system by doing a large number of laundry loads in a short period of time. In standard septic systems, solid materials settle in the tank, while effluent flows out into the ground. If you put more water into the system than it is built to handle, the high volume of water will flood your system, and can also stir up and flush solids out of the tank into the drain field (in fact, septic pumpers use water from their hoses to help break up solids in your tank before pumping them out). A typical washing machine can use up to 60 gallons of water per wash load. On a heavy day you can easily put 400, 500 or 600 gallons of water through the system in a few hours. The solution is to spread out your water use. Do one or two loads of laundry per day, rather than 10-12 loads on Saturday morning. Water softeners can also damage your system by putting too much water through the septic system. These devices can put several hundred gallons of water down the drain every week, water that is not contaminated and does not need to go through the treatment process.

There are a couple solutions to this problem. You can upgrade your softener with a newer efficient model that uses less water and regenerates on demand, instead of a timer system that regenerates whether you use water or not. You can also install a mini septic system for your water softener.

3. Prevent Solids from Leaving the Tank
First of all, you should get your tank pumped on a regular basis to prevent excessive accumulation of solids in the tank. Under normal conditions, you should have the tank inspected and pumped every 1-3 years. Very important: tanks should be pumped and inspected through the manhole cover, not the inspection pipe. Your septic contractor should also install an effluent filter in the exit baffle of the tank. Effluent filters stop the larger solids from getting out to the drainfield. They are cleaned out every few years when you have your tank pumped. They are usually only about $80. Effluent filters are cheap insurance and along with a washing machine filter, one of the best things you can do to protect your system.

4. Use of Household Cleaning Products
Excessive use of these products can contribute to septic system failure. If you do over 5 loads a week containing bleach, problems could arise. Avoid powdered detergents as they contain plastic fillers that can plug up your lines and drain field. Also, be careful with harsh automatic toilet bowl cleaners, which have put quite a few systems out of commission.

5. Should I Use a Separate System for My Washing Machine?
Some people say you should use a separate system for your washing machine, called a laundry interceptor. However, this is not necessary and in fact undesirable. Washing machines should discharge into the regular system because it actually works better than discharging into its own system. In order to work, septic systems require bacteria colonies which break down biodegradable matter. These bacteria require "food" which is found in our wastewater, but not in detergent. Without "food" these bacteria colonies die out and the system fails. Many people who have installed these systems have found this out the hard way. A research project conducted in several east coast states utilized some rather high tech systems for washing machine discharge and many began failing in as little as eight months.

Septic Tank Maintenance Tips:

· Do: divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways and other areas away from your drainfield.
· Have your septic tank pumped regularly. It should also be inspected for leaks, cracks and to make sure the exit baffle is in place.
· Install lint and effluent filters.
· Spread out your laundry loads.
· Compost your garbage or put it in the trash

Don't:
· Use a garbage disposal. These appliances normally double the amount of solids added to the tank!
· Flush sanitary napkins, disposable diapers or other non-biodegradable products into your system.
· Dump solvents, oils, paint thinners, disinfectants, pesticides or poisons down the drain as they can disrupt the treatment process and contaminate the groundwater.
· Dig in your drainfield or build anything over it.
· Drive over your drainfield or compact the soil in any way.
· Plant trees or shrubbery close to the septic system, because the roots can get in the lines and plug them. Grass is the only thing that should be planted on or near a drainfield.

If Your System Fails
In quite a few cases, a tune-up can fix your system and you can avoid the high costs of replacing the system. This tuneup includes properly pumping the tank, cleaning (jetting) the drainfield lines, and installing washing machine and effluent filters. If these measures are not sufficient, some failed systems can be rejuvenated by fracturing the soil. This process utilizes a hollow tube inserted into the soil, then a 300 pound blast or air is injected into the soil creating thousands of tiny fissures. These fissures allow the drainfield to drain, creating an oxygen atmosphere and the aerobic bacterial colonies to repopulate. Aerobic bacteria, which require oxygen, typically live in the top 26 inches of the drainfield and process waste much more quickly than anaerobic bacteria. Failing to Protect the Tubing Bends

For decades, in-floor radiant heating systems have been extensively used in Europe. Many people that have chosen a radiant heating system are aware of how comfortable, quiet and cost-effective radiant heat is to operate.

Yet, with poor design and installation of a radiant heat system certain areas of your home may be cold, while others are hot. To ensure that your system will maintain a comfortable and uniform temperature, professional design and installation by a qualified in-floor radiant heating expert is advised.

With radiant heat, uneven circuit lengths, insufficient tube size, improper tubing depths, and poor circuit layout can all affect individual areas, but I find that the most common problem with an in-floor radiant heating system stems from not properly positioning or installing bend protectors.

In fact, that’s what happened to Fred and Deb. They had to tear up part of their flooring because with their radiant flooring system the right side of their home was much colder than the left side.

You see, in larger homes or buildings it is quite common to break down a radiant heating system into three or more zones, each one providing a comfortable interior temperature control.

The proper zoning of a heating element, such as in-floor radiant heat, must take into consideration the size of zones, positioning of zones, direction the room faces, as well as the location of the thermostats for each individual zone.

Similar to all construction, it becomes vitally important to coordinate the trades so that problems are avoided.

With an in-floor radiant heating system, your radiant heat contractor may have designed the system properly. However, the concrete contractor pouring the slab may damage or adversely affect the performance of the system.

As well, many lackadaisical radiant heat installation teams don’t take the care needed to do a suitable job. I hate to say it, but I have personally heard other contractors instruct their radiant heat staff to ignore kinks and rush through jobs, in hopes of a future repair call.

If there is a crimp or blockage it will affect the flow of fluid through your radiant heat line. A crimp will restrict the flow of fluid in the radiant heat tubing and the section of floor following the crimp would not get enough fluid to heat up properly, thus keeping it colder than the other.

That’s why bend protectors become so important. Anytime your radiant heat tubing needs to make a sharp turn, the bend becomes venerable. It’s the bend protectors that safeguard the radiant heat tubes from kinking and ensures that water can continuously flow though them.

Another thing to consider; if your radiant heat lines are not well supported prior to the pouring of the concrete, or are “sagging” between supports, then the thickness of concrete above the lines will vary resulting in a non-uniform heat distribution.

If Fred and Deb had a radiant heat installer that believed in doing the best job possible, chances are they would have avoided the added expense of tearing up their flooring to fix the problem. Although they are now enjoying an even heat distribution, it was a costly error that could have been avoided.

There are a number of reasons that cats, who are fastidious creatures, may choose to urinate outside their litterbox. The primary causes are a box that is dirty, and hasn't been kept scooped or cleaned, and urinary tract infection. If your cat's litterbox is pristine, then you may want to take them to the vet for a urinalysis, and then a discussion of possible behavioral causes.

But when a cat urinates indoors, particularly if they have done it more than once in the same spot, the smell can be pretty pervasive. The worst is from unaltered tom cats, whose hormones are announcing that he's ready for romance. Neutering will not only cure the odor, but the behavior as well. However, you'll still need to find a cure for the smells and/ or stains.

If you can smell it, but not locate the stains, get a blacklight at the hardware store. These are the "special effect" lights used for Halloween and stage productions. When turned on in total darkness, they have a purple glow, and make certain things like white articles, fluoresce and glow in the dark. It will also make urine glow. Put the bulb in an automobile "trouble lamp" receptacle and make a hood to go over the usual metal cage. This will help direct the light, making it more intensive and the stains easier to find.

Urine stains that have dried, can be treated the same way as fresh spots, with the exception that they should be sprayed with warm water first, to soften the fibers and allow for easier removal of the odor and urine.

Take several folded paper towels and place them over the urine spot. Step on it with your shoe and press down. Do not "work" it in, just lend your weight to blotting. Take away the wet towel and put down dry ones. Repeat until no more liquid comes up.

Apply a stain and odor remover that has an enzyme base. Remember that cat urine is a biological product, and chemical based solutions are not usually the answer, because odor can remain afterwards, which will attract the cat back to the same spot. Use the remover as directed on the container. When done, shampoo that section of carpet, and dry. Ideally, a steam clean is best, in order to bring out any remover and urine that is deep into the nap or pile.

Designing Your Own Dream Home for the New Home Builder: What is your dream home? Do you have an idea of what it will look like? Defining a dream home is very difficult, especially if you have a spouse or significant other that has tastes different than your own. Although you might be able to agree on a floor plan, do you both agree on what the purposes for each of the rooms? My solution to this matter is simple. Brain storm together. Make it fun! After all it's your dream that you are talking about. Privately each of you collect floor plan ideas from other sources, and prioritize what you like.
List the top 10 bedroom floor plans, bathroom floor plans, kitchen floor plans and of course the floor plan layout styles. You can do this by researching these topics: Log Home Floor Plans, Model Home Floor Plans (which, by the way, utilize small spaces very efficiently), Kitchen Floor Plans, Apartment Floor Plans (another very good space effective plan), and various architectural floor plans. Collect your "top ten" sources from each of these plans and then select your top ten out of those. You will have a very comprehensible top ten list to discuss with your spouse or significant other. Keep in mind that you can make any room the size you desire from these plans, but it's the concept and ideas of the plans that you should be collecting.

You both then get together with your top ten lists and discuss why you really like the plans you choose. Make it fun! Make it a party if you want with friends and family, but you need to remember to be open minded and listen to the each other since you both have your own pro's and con's with each of the plans. Surprising enough, eventually you will agree on a top ten between you. In fact you probably will have extremely similar plans picked out! I did this with my wife and found that in a few hours we agreed completely on our dream home! This was the hardest part! (This method also works in determining baby names and other life critical significant other issues.)

Factors to Consider: Probably the hardest factor to consider is financing availability and budget. You need to review your own current budget and evaluate how the new budget will affect your current life style. If you check your credit report and it is not what was anticipated, you might have to adjust your budget or take the necessary steps to clean it up. Since I am not a financial specialist, I would ask you to consult with the credit personnel at your local bank. Once your credit is cleaned up as much as possible, apply for a loan. Apply for the maximum amount you can get. Find out what the monthly payments would be and see if that works in your budget. Make sure your monthly payments do not affect your ability to landscape and buy some interior design items and new furniture. A common mistake most people make is that they put everything in their home but leave out the funds and budget for interior design and landscaping. Always have available financing reserved for future emergencies. Do not put everything in your home and become house poor.

Location of your new dream home is also a factor. Does the neighborhood have houses similar to your style? Is there a variety of home styles? Do research on what type of neighborhood it is. Are there neighborhood, city or county ordinances that might affect your lifestyle? Make a list of all the pro's and con's of each of your choices of sites, narrow it down to your top 3 to 5 and seriously think about all the factors that might influence your decision. You don't always want the perfect size or shaped lot if there are ordinances that will effect how you use it. Be careful.

Make sure you have no surprises. Ask your real estate agent for a list of permits necessary to build your dream home on the lot you chose. If they will not provide this, then go to your city and county and get the list. Make sure your construction contactor provides all of these permits in their contract with you.

Local codes can also surprise a lot of dream home builders. Ask the architect that does the signed blue print on your floor plans to research local codes that may or may not affect your floor plan and dream home design. Homework pays. You can save yourself a lot of money and time if you do your homework up front.

DIY - Upgrade Your Old Deck

Is your deck looking like it is past its prime? Does it even have the odd softer spot here and there? Is it faded and looks more the color of gray concrete than of red cedar? If you have already priced out the cost of a replacement and decided that you haven't got a spare $8,000 at the moment - think whether or not you have a spare weekend or two. If you 'con' the family or friends to join in and help, it may even be a fun and memorable weekend.

The number of tools you will need is minimal and they can be rented. Apart from the usual household tools, you will need a small saw to remove and replace the small damaged sections of deck boards (and some two-by-fours for replacement boards if you need them), an electric sprayer to apply the cleaners, etc, a (long handled) painting pad and a stiff deck broom to use as a scrubbing brush. Some people recommend a power washer, but if you do use one, be careful with the pressure. Some of the pressure washers are so fierce that they can actually force dents into your woodwork!

A normal household water pressure when applied through a garden hose is around 60 to 80 pounds per square inch pressure, and you can buy pressure washers that can multiply this by about 15 times and zoom it up to 1,000 pounds per square inch. Ouch!

If you use a fierce power washer you will have to keep the wand a good eighteen inches away from the deck surface and also do not let it remain stationary on any one area, i.e., keep it moving. However, before you get to that part, check your deck for loose nails, twisted boards, softer areas that must be cut out and replaced, etc.

If you have nails popping up, you can hammer them below the surface using a drift punch, or lever them out and replace with screws or a slightly larger nail. If some of your planks are twisted, they will need to be screwed down while someone stands on them! If this is not working, the boards will have to be replaced.

Once you have your deck ready to work on, the first thing to do is to apply 'deck wash'. Wet your deck down and apply the wash directly onto the deck; spray on only the amount that you can scrub in in about a ten minute period. Use your broom to scrub in the wash and also to distribute it evenly.

After leaving the wash for about fifteen minutes, you can hose or power wash it off. You will be amazed at the difference that just a wash can make to your deck. If some spots still remain dull or dark, they may be helped by the wood brightener.

The procedure for the brightener is similar. Wet the deck down, spray on the brightener BUT this time wait a few minutes, scrub it into the surface and after about ten minutes you can rinse it off. Work on a strip about ten boards wide.

Once this is done you must wait a few days to let it thoroughly dry out. If it has not rained for a couple of days, then you can seal it on the second weekend.

After all the hard work, you can now apply the part that really makes a difference: the sealer/stain which will waterproof your deck. Whichever finish you choose, remember to paint the railings first; use a three inch brush for this and work down from the top, to catch the drips!

If you've had to add many new pieces of wood in your deck, and you wish to keep it looking uniform, then you may wish to paint it. Use proper deck paint and get the best one that you can afford. Some manufacturers recommend two coats of primer and one of top coat, whereas others recommend two of top coat and one of primer! A quick drying self priming alkyd paint is ideal if you want less work.

If you are going to stain it, notice that there is a heavy stain and a light stain. This refers to the way that it looks on your wood, not to the durability. A heavy bodied stain will show up the grain but not the texture, whereas lighter bodied will still show the texture as well as the grain. If you feel that your wood is somewhat 'weathered' and overly textured, you may wish to choose the heavier stain to smooth it out a little. If your stain is not a stain/sealer, you can coat the stain with a sealer once it is dry; use one that says it is 'non chalking' to avoid your finish being rubbed off with wear.

Apply the deck stain with a painting pad (like a long broom handle with a flat board on the end of it.) A painting pad has a slightly rough finish so that it will rub the liquid into the surface of the wood. Apply your sealing coat along the grain of the wood.

Wait 24 hours, pull out your sun chairs, stretch out and congratulate yourself; you have just saved thousands of dollars!

Using Room Color To Sell Your Home

As soon as they walk in the door, potential buyers are going to be subtly influenced by the colors of the rooms. These influences can be positive or they can be negative, and they're more important than you might think. A wet basement can be just a nuisance or even real nightmare. Each year, thousands of homeowners are faced with the unpleasant side effects of seasonal rainfall. Problems they can face range from just dampness to even flooding. Chronic basement leakage is a serious problem that can destroy personal property, furnishings, appliances, and sometimes even cause permanent structural damage to a homes foundation. Excessive moisture is a huge attraction to wood-eating insects, wood rot and decay.
Despite the pervasiveness of the problem, few homeowners are aware of the causes of water leakage.

Common Causes

One common cause of basement leakage is improper surface drainage, such as a yard sloped toward the home. In many cases, the problem can be greatly alleviated by re-grading the yard to slope away from the homes foundation or diverting surface water around the house.

Other common culprits include poorly positioned rain gutter downspouts, missing, leaking or clogged rain gutters. A downspout that is improperly positioned to drain against the side of the house, allows water to build up along the foundation wall, until the backed-up “reservoir” finds a weak spot in the foundation wall.

The most difficult cause of basement leakage is a high water table. A high water table problem occurs when the home is built too deeply in the ground, into the level where water remains constant throughout the year. A high water table problem can also be caused by under ground springs or sustained periods of rainfall that cause the water table to rise during the wet seasons.

Is it Leakage or Condensation?

You should try to determine if your problem is actually water “leaking” in or if it’s just condensation forming on the cool surfaces. Condensation occurs when warm, humid air comes into contact with cooler basement walls, floors, water pipes etc.

As an example, just take a cold bottle of soda out of your refrigerator and set it on the counter. After several minutes, you’ll notice steam forming on the outside of the bottle. After many minutes pass, you will see a small puddle of water forming at the base of the bottle, as the beads of moisture start dripping down. This is a classic example of condensation, not “leakage”. If your basement is actually leaking, the water should not just “appear”. You should be able to see where it’s coming in as it leaks, in the form of a puddle or stream or water.

Helpful Tips

Your rain gutters should be cleaned of leaves and debris at least once per year.
Downspouts should direct water runoff from the roof to a discharge point at least several feet away from the homes foundation. Use a splash block at the end of your downspout to avoid soil erosion. Never bury your downspout lines unless you can empty them out to daylight.

Buy a good dehumidifier to lower the natural humidity level in your basement. Make sure your dehumidifier is the proper size for your basement. Ask for a drain hose attachment so you don’t have to empty the water collected every day. Get a unit with a built-in de-icer. Dehumidifiers are actually refrigeration coils and can freeze up and stop working.
Keep the doors and windows to your basement closed, year round. Opened doors and windows allow extra humidity to enter your basement, causing condensation. Your dehumidifier will also run less.

Waterproofing Paints and Sealers There are several good waterproofing paints and sealers on the market today. Waterproof paints and sealers can work well for minor dampness on walls and floors. Pay special attention to the preparation instructions from the products manufacturer. Be aware though, interior waterproof paints and sealers don’t do anything to alleviate the “source” of the problem.

Lets' get started quickly. whenever I hear someone say
he/she wants to design/decorate a bedroom a lot of things
come to my mind.

But, let me clear one thing, design and decorating are two
different aspects. When I say design, I mean a whole lot
bigger perspective. Design includes a lot more maturity in
terms of how you perceive a space from within.

Of course I will cover more about design in some other article.
Decoration is more close to everyday actions that can be
taken in order to change or alter a space. Decoration deals
with accessories used in a space. Very small things, such as
curtain rods, their color, lampshades, small statues, table
cloths, light fittings, are all parts of the detailing.

It is not that design does not deal with these aspects, but
decoration is more do-able easily than the whole design

While common windows allow heat to escape, special windows with low-e coating, multiple panes, inert gas fill, and/or insulated frames can reduce heat loss 50 to 75 per cent. By sealing your building envelope and insulating well, you will ensure that the heat stays in the house. It can then be distributed through the house using a regular ceiling fan.

Direct sunlight is not the only important light to think of when considering energy use. By using overall daylight to light a space you can cut down the need for electrical lighting and the heat that's created by it.
