Green Energy Ideas for Your Home

Solar energy comes from the sun. A biology class will tell you that in addition to affecting climate and weather, sunlight provides the energy that sustains most life on earth. It also can be harnessed to provide heating, lighting and electricity. Solar power has become a hot topic lately, but this technology is nothing new – Native Americans, people in China and even the early Greeks have historically turned their buildings to the sun for heat.

These early architects were using what is known as passive solar energy. This technique makes the best use of regular building materials to trap heat with no additional mechanical equipment used. Floors, windows and roofs play a role in attracting (or deflecting) the sun's rays.

There are a number of ways to take advantage of solar radiation, starting with the house's placement. Having the house face the equator (we'll assume we're in the Northern Hemisphere, thus the house should face south) means that it gets the day's sunlight. Window orientation is also important – for optimal efficiency, most windows should point within 30 degrees of due south. Maintaining a small percentage of north facing windows will ensure that your home is comfortable year round (and not cooking in the summer).

Rock or stone tile floors and brick walls will absorb the solar radiation and continue to give off heat after the sun is gone. While common windows allow heat to escape, special windows with low-e coating, multiple panes, inert gas fill, and/or insulated frames can reduce heat loss 50 to 75 per cent. By sealing your building envelope and insulating well, you will ensure that the heat stays in the house. It can then be distributed through the house using a regular ceiling fan.

Direct sunlight is not the only important light to think of when considering energy use. By using overall daylight to light a space you can cut down the need for electrical lighting and the heat that's created by it. Artificial lighting has only been the main source of illumination since the 20th century. And using natural light may have added benefits for your physical and mental health. In addition to windows, daylighting makes use of skylights, light pipes (also known as light tubes), atriums, and light shelves to illuminate the interior. This is best considered when building, but with a few small renos your house can be much brighter, naturally!

Passive cooling is another way to cut your bills and become more energy efficient. This is especially useful in warmer climates, where air conditioning can be a major power consumer. Passive cooling refers to using things for shading, to absorb the heat, and goes hand in hand with passive solar energy. It can be accomplished using exterior landscaping choices – trees and other vegetation – or interior/exterior building options, such as shades, blinds or special glazing on windows.

Whether you are building a new home, looking at doing some renovations or just want to cut your energy bill, passive solar energy and cooling techniques are an easy way to incorporated green ideas into your home. With the rising interest in environmental issues, they make an excellent selling feature and they'll save you money.

Preventing Home Fires From Alternate Heat Sources

Baby it's cold outside, but it's getting expensive to turn up that oil furnace. More and more home owners are turning to alternate sources of heating.

People are turning to firewood, electric heaters, and gas fireplaces for added warmth, but these heat sources present a new set of cautions for fire prevention.

Electric heaters or electric fireplace:

Make sure you read your manufacturer's instructions and heed the warning labels for your portable heater.

Never leave it unattended, and always unplug it when not in use. When you do unplug the unit, pull the cord straight out to prevent cord damage.

Never plug the heater into a power strip or extension cord to prevent overheating.

Keep flammable objects at least three feet away from the heater and never block the air intake or outlet.

Wood Fireplace:

Have a qualified person inspect and clean your chimney on a regular basis.

Keep any combustible items away from the front of the fireplace, and cover the front with a glass or metal screen.

Store matches or lighters in a locked cabinet.

General Safety Tips:

Candles are commonly used during the holidays. Never leave them unattended or burning in an enclosed area. Always use stable candle holders that are not likely to tip over. Blow out the candles when you leave the room.

Devise an escape plan for the family and practice it twice a year. Each room should have 2 exits and pick an outdoor meeting place.

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Mark a date on the calendar to test them monthly and change the batteries every time you change your clocks.

Clean the lint filter in your clothes dryer every time you use it. The build up of lint can catch fire.

Learn how to put out a pan fire by sliding the lid over the flames and always keep a kitchen fire extinguisher handy.

Everyone in the family should know how to "Stop, Drop and Roll" if their clothes catch fire. To access the best air for breathing, practice getting down low and crawling as an escape strategy.

Keep emergency phone numbers handy.

The Monetary Benefits of Home Repairs

Owning your own home comes with a certain amount of responsibility. You are required to pay the mortgage every month, you have to pay all the bills associated with having your own home, and there is also the issue of keeping your house in good order.

Minor repairs are fairly easy to keep up with; many of them only take a few moments to do, and most people can handle this kind of small repair themselves. But what should you do when it comes to larger repairs? The rule of thumb here seems to be that the larger the repair is, the more money it will cost. It is this rule that makes some people try and avoid doing the necessary repairs for as long as they can, to avoid having to work out how to pay for them.

This is understandable, but it can put the safety of your property in danger. It can also lead to problems if you are hoping to sell your home in the near future – and it can also lead to higher fuel bills.

Windows are a common problem and often need repair. Although many properties are double glazed, many are not and this can result in heat loss if your windows are old and no longer fit properly. Although old wooden framed windows are relatively easy to maintain, it’s tempting to keep on patching them to get yet another year’s use out of them, when in fact the frames are becoming rotten and more exposed to the elements.

If the windows are particularly bad you may even end up with a gap between the frame and the wall, which can lead to cold air and rain coming in. This in turn can cause damp, which is not a welcome sight in your home.

Loft insulation is another essential if you don’t already have it. As heat rises, it can be lost through the roof of your home if you don’t take steps to stop it escaping. If you’ve ever seen a row of houses after a fall of snow, you can tell which ones have insulation and which ones don’t – the ones that do still have snow on the roof, whereas the ones that don’t have none. It just goes to show exactly how much money you could be throwing away by not taking on those essential repairs and measures that will save you money on your bills every month.

The main reason for putting off any kind of major home repair is the cost, but you can always look at the wide range of secured loans available in order to raise the cash you need. Taking on any kind of essential repair will not only add value to your home, it will also help reduce your heating bills – not to mention the cost of having to perform emergency repairs to get you through each winter.

Hardwood Floors: Maintaining Their Beauty and Shine

Hardwood floors may be the crowning glory of every home they grace. With a little care and effort, you can ensure that your wood floors will last a lifetime and provide you with elegance, style, and sophistication. Knowing what type of finish you have is important to ensure that you are protecting and maintaining your investment. It may be a Polyurethane covering or a wax finish. You need to know the type of finish your floor has so you can choose the proper cleaners and polishers for your floor.

No matter what type of finish your floor has one rule remains the same. Water is most damaging to hardwood floors. There is just no getting around it, if water penetrates the surface finish of your floor and works its way into the boards, your floor will be damaged. Therefore, it is recommended that you use a slightly damp mop when cleaning your hardwood floors. A slightly damp mop will effectively clean the surface of your floor without allowing the water to penetrate through the finish. A very high glossy sheen on your wood floor means that it has a Polyurethane finish. If the floor looks matte, then it is a wax or oil based finish. There are specific hardwood floor cleaners designed for both finishes so make sure that you use an appropriately based cleaner.

Dusting and vacuuming are vitally important to maintaining the beauty and shine of your floor. Dirt can work its way into the crevices of your floor and cause damage. By dust mopping and vacuuming you can keep the high gloss appearance of your finish with out investing too much effort, time, or money. Using a soft brush attachment or a dust mop will pick up loose debris and dirt and protect your floor from damage. On average, expect to dust your floors weekly and when there are unexpected messes.

You should also protect your floors from surface damage. High heels, animal claws, and the legs of heavy furniture may all pose a threat to the shine of your floor. Unfortunately, they are also sources for gouges and permanent scuff marks as well. Protect your floor by placing area or throw rugs in high traffic areas, making sure that people don't wear high heels on the floor, and by adding furniture pads to the bottom of your furniture, chairs, and table legs. If you have pets that will be spending time walking on your floors, make sure that their claws are properly trimmed to prevent them from scratching the wood surface. By taking these precautions and using a commercially prepared floor cleaner and polisher designed for your floor's finish, you can ensure that your floors will provide you with a lifetime of excellence, beauty, and shine.

What Color Has To Do With Home Decorating

If the color of your walls is one of the 5 things you hate about your room, it is time for a change! Whether decorating a cozy den, an elegant kitchen or bathroom, a romantic bedroom or a fun kid's room, wallpaper or paint must all be the same—that is, it must be color coordinated, peaceful and aesthetically appealing. While some might entertain the idea of flaming red wallpaper, nobody wants to actually live in such a chaotic color scheme. (Unless you're revisiting Disco?) Wallpaper or paint must be chosen carefully.

A Color Scheme

Not only must the wall color be chosen carefully according to design and taste, it must also match the overall scheme of the room. It must match or in some way complement, the fabrics, carpeting and furniture. While the room should not feature a monochromatic color, it does need to match according to common home decorating standards.

Colors

Light colors are usually the most preferred by home decorators. Lights colors, no matter the actual hue, are considered peaceful and elegant and seem to bring out the best in tenants. Some houses have darker shades however, like oak or sand colored. Dark colored Victorian houses are a popular trend. The most important factor is that a theme is followed, with colors carefully complementing the rest of the room and house.

Borders

Borders can be painted a different color from the rest of the room and furnishings and yet still appear tasteful and matched. Painting borders might be a consideration for a home decorator that doesn't want to paint the entire room, due to a lack of time or finances. Though borders can be painted different colors, they should be carefully chosen to match the color of the wallpaper or paint.

Wallpapering Or Painting?

Some homeowners overlay their walls with high quality wallpaper, while others simply paint the wall a preferred color. No matter which you choose, the color should complement the rest of the room. Some home decorators however have been known to experiment with this practice, by painting one wall a certain color to highlight furnishings or even repainting geometric shapes over a white a wall.

Color makes or breaks home decoration. A room could be stylish and elegant, yet feature a terrible color and thus totally fail to impress. Because of the complexity of colors, many homeowners will enlist the help of an interior decorator. Consulting an interior decorator—whether professionally, through a brief consultation, or just as a friend--is always a good idea. In addition, if you are undertaking a home remodel, it is bes to get financial advice on remodeling your home before you start, to make sure you have a proper plan to complete it.

Easy Home Decorating Tips to Use Today!

Are you looking for home decorating tips to help you feel more focused on your latest decorating project? Here are a few ideas to get you “back on track.”

First of all, where are all of your home décor accessories? Are they scattered among several closets and drawers around the house? Consider setting up an “accessories closet” which will hold all of the items you are not currently using. This might include such objects as candles, candleholders, vases, bowls, floral arrangements, and trays. The “accessories closet” should also hold practical, everyday necessities such as scissors, tape and floral-arranging materials as well as a tool-box containing common household tools.

Imagine how easy it will be to change the home decor in a room when the seasons change. Just look in the “accessories closet” for a touch of fall decor to replace that summery flower arrangement. Now that makes home decorating fast and easy!

Another home decorating tip is to add height to accessories on a table which makes them more attractive to the eye. Try using a small stack of books mixed in with other home decor to add interest to the display. You might also set a small novelty item on top of the books.

Twigs in pottery vases make quite a statement and are very easy to assemble. These “bare branches” might be bamboo, willow twigs, cattails or unique, rustic branches purchased in a floral or craft shop. A large vase and branch arrangement looks great sitting on the floor and can be an attractive “filler” for a bare corner.

Keep in mind the home decorating rule of arranging home décor in odd numbers. Three small baskets on a table, five small framed prints on a wall, and seven tall, slim candleholders over the fireplace—you get the idea! Arrangements of three, five, or seven are more attractive and pleasing to the eye than groupings of two, four, or six objects.

Enjoy seeing your decorating projects take on a new life by mixing ingenuity and imagination to make home decorating easy and fun.

Art of Interior Designing Solutions

Interior design is the art of applying the knowledge of interior space, with the manipulation of spatial volume and surface treatment application. Interior space design draws on aspects of environmental psychology, interior architecture design, product design and furniture design in addition to traditional decoration. An interior designer is a person who is an experienced professional in the area of interior design or one who designs interiors as part of their job requirements.

Depending on the complexity of the design project, the designer will need to prepare drawings and submit them for architectural review which later requires approval by a construction inspector to ensure that the design is equivalent with all applicable building codes. If a design needed any structural work, the designer will need to work with an architect or engineer for that part of the project. Most designs also requires hiring of contractors to complete technical task such as lighting, electrical wiring or plumbing,. If required, the designer will select qualified contractors and write up work contracts.

Natural Cork Flooring

With the myriad of flooring types available, shoppers tend to lean toward those that are most popular at the time. Unfortunately, this practice can cause a consumer to miss out on some great flooring options.

One of these hidden gems is cork flooring. Imagine a floor covering that is attractive, comfortable, environmentally friendly, durable and affordable. When most people think of cork, they think of a wine bottle or a cork board, and due to this lack of consumer awareness, this product is commonly overlooked. In order to appreciate this material, you really need to understand its unique characteristics.

Origin

Cork is actually the bark of the cork oak tree found in the Mediterranean. Portugal is the largest supplier with over 30% of the world's cork trees and 70% of the world's cork production. Every nine years the bark is harvested by hand with the average tree yielding about 4,000 corks.

The bark is honeycomb in nature, containing 90% air that can be compressed to 40% and then quickly returning to its original shape. This feature creates a natural shock absorber.

Benefits

Due to its air like composition, walking on cork is like walking on air. Its comfortable walking surface is perfect for kitchens where you are standing for lengthy periods of time.

Cork has a natural beauty with a rich, varying grain, similar to wood. It also comes in many different patterns and tile sizes from various manufacturers.

The same feature that makes the floor comfortable creates a natural noise reducer. It's extremely quiet to walk on and reduces the impact if an object is dropped on its surface. It's insulating effect make cork a great choice in a bathroom over radiant floor heating or even installed over cold concrete floors.

Cork is an environmentally friendly product in many ways. Since the bark from the tree grows back nine years after harvest, it's a reusable and sustainable product. It also contains suberin, a substance that is resistant to insects, mold and protects cork from rotting when exposed to moisture. Suberin is naturally fire resistant and cork doesn't release any toxic gases when it burns.

The durability of cork makes it a perfect choice for virtually any room in the house, including those high traffic areas. It has been successfully used in churches and other public buildings since 1898.

Disadvantages

Due to its resilience, heavy furniture can dent the flooring, so it's important to use castors or furniture pads under table legs. Just as with wood, an excess of water can damage the finish. It shouldn't be used where you have problems with moisture or flooding.

Costs

The cost of cork flooring compares to high-end laminate or hardwood and runs approximately $4 to 6$ per square foot.

Maintenance

Cork floors are extremely easy to maintain with regular sweeping or vacuuming. Damp mop the floor monthly with a mild detergent and very little water and avoid using abrasive or ammonia-based cleaning products.

The flooring requires up to five coats of urethane sealer, which will last several years. A dulling floor can be refreshed with another coat.

bathroom in wood. Part two.

Bathtubs with this structure look more than stylish, and, as a rule, keep to the strict minimalism. Most commonly they are a part of designers' collections, where besides them are present a wooden wash basin, receptor, wall panels and accessories, which allows to create a completely finished image of a bathroom space as a whole.

The third and most popular type of wooden bathtubs radically differs from all the preceding. In the first place their main feature is not a stylish modern bathroom design, but something quite the contrary. They are deliberately archaic, cottage style, which attracts none the less, and sometimes even stronger, than the quaint but a little cold minimalism. These are really direct heirs of those same primitive small tubs and bathtubs, in which in all continents and all history the mankind have been bathing.

The bathroom production technology for these bathtubs is at the same time simple and complicated. On the one hand, they are direct descendants of a cask, because they represent a bottom and sides, made of separate boards, fixed by copper or brass bands. The tightness is reached mainly by precise adjustment of all elements to each other, and use of modern sealers is only an auxiliary factor. The method of waterproof wood processing here is approximately the same as with casks.

The form of the bathtubs of this type is usually circular or oval, which is determined by production peculiarities. Tubs strongly remind their prototype, and look like supernormal casks. All in all, for example, "an ofuro" bathtub in a modern version practically doesn't differ from those in which in their times lavished samurais after battles.

By the way, bathtubs and fonts, created after a fashion and style of a cask, are equipped by hydro and air-massage, which makes them even more attractive. And it's in the first instance not a designer's whim or a stylish decoration of the interior, but rather a pragmatic thing, devised to be constantly exploited in a usual regime. But don't indulge a vain hope - bathtubs-casks are not that cheap.

Drawbacks and unquestionable benefits.
Feelings, bestowed by bathing in tender and natural ancient hugs of a wooden bathtub, are incomparable. It's really the thing for which it is worth to take certain expenditures, sacrifices and efforts. What can be matched with a pleasure of touching a polished rich wood... The delight is intensified by a subtle aesthetics of the event. The aura emanated by a live wood block, can't be imitated or faked. Contrary to the wide-spread opinion, it's now technically possible to build in a wooden bathtub hydro and air-massage systems, and also to equip them with chromotherapy appliances. Nevertheless, a number of rather strict restrictions do exist.

As we know, the functions of bathtubs in our houses are often not limited to their direct purpose and are somewhat widened, i.e. people not only bathe in there themselves but wash their four-legged friends. So well, in case of a wooden bathtub it's absolutely out of the question.

One must choose cosmetics with a special thoroughness. Caring and cleaning a precious article should be done strictly in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Properly, for major hygienic procedures, one should better have a separate shower-cabin, and leave the bathtub exclusively for pleasure and relaxation, and as far as possible not use it severely. Strange as it might sound, it's too good for its direct purpose, that is, for simple bathing.. .

There is no telling, that now wood together with cast iron, acrylic and steel is a usual material for manufacturing bathtubs. It's still another item, it's chic. But a wooden bathtub cannot be considered a special exotics, a rare exclusion from common rules, like it was several years ago. And if only recently there existed only one or two models, and each was a unique rarity, now producers of costly bathroom fixtures have formed a sufficiently big offer, and in various bathroom style solutions at that. This, of course, is expensive, and will be always expensive, but where there's a wish to possess a desired new bathroom design, no other obstacles exist!

bathroom in wood. Part one.

For many years there occurs in a modern bathroom a silent battle between necessary practicalities and designers' ideas. Now and again people place there something out of the common. One of the demonstrative examples of this kind might be a bathtub, made of a natural wood. By some reason, we believe that water and wood are incompatible. But let's remember ancient small tubs, casks and troughs. Well, we might consider a wooden bathtub a distant descendant of its archaic ancestors, and it looks into the future with quite confidence.

Surely, wood is not too fit for making bathroom fixtures, but a general trend to sacrifice more functionality for glamorous exterior brought blocks of rich woods back to circulation. Moreover, a certain role was played by a change in the social outlook, and by the aspiration to bring to one's life more of naturalness and, of course, a fashion for all real. As a result, wood has become a terrific lure for effeminate consumer. A possibility to have in one's bathroom a rare, stylish and actually symbolic object has totally compensated for some non-practicality and complicity of care.

Not only wooden bathtub, but stylish bathtub.
During several last centuries practically all the vessels, which crossed the expanses of the seas and oceans of the Earth, were being built only from wood. This centuries old experience was picked up by the modern producers of wooden bathtubs. They use for their production only those species of woods, which naturally possess a high stability towards moister attack, like teak wood blocks, mahogany, wenge wood, larch, i. e. those, which historically were most valued by shipbuilders. A costly and sophisticated modern bathroom technology, with the help of which the bathtubs are protected from ruinous impact of moisture, is a fruit of handling development for ships and yachts hulls. A special chic is in trying to preserve wood in its primeval beauty, to minimize all perceptible coatings. Smooth and streamlined, these bathtubs are made from excellently fitting fragments, they are polished and in some cases covered with additional varnish, and as a result, they form an absolutely whole structure. A beautiful texture of the block becomes a further decorative factor. Naturally, every producer keeps the details in secret.

But some secrets leak out.
Bathtubs by their exterior often remind graceful barks and yachts. An interesting fact: one of Italian factories, which in its time built yachts, was now retrofitted to produce bathtubs!

Very logical that this very outline has become one of the most popular among designers. These bath tubs are especially good for new bathroom designs, styled in such popular now trends as Zen, ambient and minimalism. They not only daintily accomplish the interior, but called in the first place to attract major attention namely to themselves, and they are the main style-forming factor in the bathroom all in all. Usually, such a bathtub is placed in the middle of a bathroom, often on a podium, so as to arrest the attention of all who enter.

The other rather widespread types are massive rectangular bathtubs, performed from a block of natural wood, or specially treated plywood. It might seem at the first glance that they must be not that comfortable, but it's not true. In order that a person felt comfy inside such a fairly hard and deep rectangular structure, a smoothly bent bed with a headrest is placed there.

Winter Checkup Priority: Heater Installation

Opposed to warm air systems like forced air heaters, radiant heaters delivers the source of heat to the floor level — not the ceiling — and it doesn’t stir up allergens or dusts. It is the oldest form of heating used to provide comfort and it is the basis for all and yet the most desired method for delivering comfortable, natural and efficient heat in our homes.
From the days of Ancient Rome, then the adaptation of the Koreans, to this date: most radiant floor heating follows the Frank Lloyd Wright method of routing hot water through pipes in the flooring to add heat during cold climate. And now that the winter season is up, here are some basic ideas for heating installations.
If you're considering a radiant floor heating system, you can choose between electric and water (hydronic) systems and might want to consider whether the installation will be 'wet' (embedded in a concrete slab or lightweight concrete) or 'dry' (attached on top or beneath the subfloor or sandwiched between two layers of subflooring). The right choices will depend on whether you're dealing with new or existing construction, the type of finish floor you have or wish to install, energy costs in your area, and how much you're willing to spend.

A well-designed radiant heat system with a 96% efficient condensing boiler, indirect water heater, Pex tubing, stainless steel, brass manifolds and other necessary equipment to install it will normally cost not less than $3 per square foot.

WINTER CHECKLIST FOR YOUR HEATERS

The BEST time to check your heating system is in the Fall, no later than the end of October; this way it will save you time and energy.

• Test run — turn the thermostat to heat mode and set it to 80 degrees just for testing. Your heater is functioning properly when you hear the furnace turn on and the warm air blows within a few minutes. If it is running okay, you can turn the thermostat back to its normal setting. If in case, the heater is not running properly, you can try diagnosing it yourself using a troubleshooting manual provided by the manufacturer or you can call a heating contractor for help.

• Seasonal Maintenance – The secret of a properly working appliance is to using it accordingly. Turn on the heater at least twice a month for system check-ups.

• Just like your air conditioning system, make sure that you replace a new clean air filter.

• Hire a professional and credible heating contractor in your local area. Not all troubleshooting is translated in the manual. You need an expert’s opinion if something goes wrong with your system, so make sure you have someone just a phone call away.

HEATING CONTRACTORS

There are many available companies that offer heating installations. Whether you are about to build a radiant heat panel for your new home or add a radiant heat system to your house for remodeling, your local heating contractor can help you with your project. If you want to know more about the heating installation, please click this site that services radiant heaters.

Choosing the Right Colors For Your Walls

I am an interior designer and student of personal growth. I absolutely love working with fabrics and color. I find that color is the one denominator that can radically change a room from ho-hum to stunning. Color is what gives your home the warmth and comfort. It does not have to be wild, strong colors. They can be very soft and soothing colors.

However for many, choosing the correct color to paint their walls is a terrifying experience. They may have chosen beautiful fabrics for their home, but when it comes to the walls it is like a different animal. I really can see why a paint chip 2” x 2” is a little unsettling. I have gone into homes where they have purchased a dozen different colors and painted a 1’ x 1’ (if I’m lucky) strip on the wall all lined up like ducks in a row. No wonder this is confusing.

First, when you are sampling paint colors, you need to apply a strip that is at least 3’ x 3’ so you can get a clear picture of the color in a large volume. Also paint that same color in several different areas of the room, some in sun light and some in shade. You will be amazed at how different colors look when influenced by light. Colors will also change during the different times of day. You will think it is a totally different color from morning to evening. If you are considering several different colors, spread them out in different areas of the room so you can look and evaluate each color individually without the influence of your other options. Don’t over analyze the color just live with it over a few days and let your emotions make your decision. You’ll know when you feel it.

Now to what color. Before you chose, you need to ask yourself “do I want my walls to be the background to support all my beautiful fabrics, furniture, art, and rugs?” or “do I want my walls colors to be an intricate part of the color pallet by adding color?” If you want your walls to be a background color, you should stick will neutral tones. This does not necessarily mean off white. Neutrals range from light tones of beige, taupe, tan, and sage greens to darker tones as chocolate, mocha, ochre, rust, and moss green. If you’re looking for the walls to add a color statement, the color should be determined after you have decided on an entire color plan for your home. Usually choose the color that you feel you can enjoy in large doses. The next question you need to ask yourself is “how light or dark (the value) do I want my walls?” If you find you gravitate toward soft pastels in your wardrobe and enjoy the quieter side of colors, lighter value colors will appeal to you. If you enjoy richer and bolder tones, darker values will appeal to you better. A very important factor to keep in mind is the amount of natural light the room receives. With a lot of natural light, you can usually go one value darker than you would think. Obviously, the opposite applies with a room that receives little light.

Have you determined your color plan for your home yet? If not, select two colors that you naturally enjoy from your upholstery fabrics, art work, area rugs or drapery fabrics. Also select an accent color, your “passion or hot” color, usually red, wine, rust or orange. This is now your color plan. If you have determined that you want your wall colors to be the background, select a neutral that works with your color plan. Find a neutral that compliments your flooring color, cabinet and counter tops. If you want your walls to add color, select one of the easier colors you can enjoy in quantity. Remember, color goes a long way on a wall. It is in large volume. You may choose to paint your entire home a single color or select two colors to paint different rooms or accent walls. Accent walls are usually your focal point wall. I recommend that you change your values (light or dark) if you are using a single color. It gives your room more interest and dimension.

I am a big believer in also painting your ceiling. It covers a mass amount of volume and adds great warmth, so why keep in white. Usually your ceilings are a lighter value of the walls if they are less than 9’ in height. If over 9’, you may choose a darker value. Very high ceilings definitely need the darker tones to bring the room into a more personal scale. If you are choosing to paint two colors in different rooms, I recommend selecting a neutral color to use throughout all the rooms. This will usually mirror the floor and give the home a more unifying feeling.

I like to keep all my trim and doors white because white makes the colors stand out nice, clean and crisp.

Home Remodeling Plans For Christmas

Christmas is a time to celebrate family relationship and friendship. And there is no better mood enhancer than the colors that you see inside your home. And since your living room and dining area is the most visited part of your house, why not start simple home remodeling plans that is desirable for the season.

In some ways, and some says, colors is more important than any other actual design elements. In different concepts, color adds value to our homes and creates mood and elevates feelings to anyone who dwells in it. The addition of colors can make a difference. You don’t need to paint your entire house for the holidays but just add some touch of paint to a certain portion of your house.

Of course, when we say Christmas, ornaments like Christmas trees and lights or other decors plays a large part, but this I should tell you: coloring your walls or ceiling, or a simple trimming paint job can create a mood that will sing “we wish you a merry Christmas.”

Interior house painting may seem complicated if you don’t know the basics of it; that is why there are so many house painters that offer their services, but if you have painting skills the task is very much easy – all you have to know now is which colors are in fashion.

Colors red and green are the official colors of Christmas. You can incorporate it to your decors but I highly doubt that you’d incorporate both colors on your walls. Talk about redundancy, right?

You can opt, however, with a monochromatic theme. You can use red or a green individually and add proportion or texture to it for a more dimensional view also by painting a color that is in the color family or red or green respectively.

Christmas is always a winter season, so majority of homeowners gravitate toward warmer tones to create a mood of warmth inside the home. Best examples of warm colors include red, yellow, orange, and also includes a neutral hue like beige. But if you want to feel the winter inside the house, you can paint snow-themed colors like white, blue, silver, or other cool tones.

If you are the type of person who deviates from one-colored or warm-cool tone themes, you can make your own color combinations for Christmas.

When mixing colors it may be helpful to remember that most colors of equal depth will “go” together and same goes with complimentary colors. Here are some endless color combinations that you can find very useful in house painting for the Christmas holidays:

· red and green
· all white/ red/ green
· red and white
· green and white
· any color with gold
· any color with silver
· white, blue, and silver
· lilac/ bright purple, blue, and green
· red and silver
· red and gold
· icy blue, lilac, silver
· autumn colors like beige, brown, golden yellows
· forest green, burgundy, gold

Christmas Decoration - A few tips on how to enhance your home

Christmas is closing by at rapid speed and we slowly need to start to think how can we make it unique this year. This article will wak you through a couple very original tips that will help you make this years holiday memorable.

Themes - There are several options: You can use one single theme for your entire home or create a different theme for each room. How to do it? It all depends, certain families might prefer one colour that dominates all others, some a set of matching ornaments that appear all over the house.

Leave nothing untouched - How about bringing Christmas in to unusal spaces, such as the bathroom? It can be much fun to decorate unusual places. Don't forget practical thinking - refrain from using materials such as paper or water paint in wet areas and watch for places that produce heat - I'm sure your home to be "burning with enthusiasm".

The Christmas tree - If you opt for living trees, make sure you're going to cut the stump with a fresh cut and put it in water immediately. You want to cut it diagonally, making the area of absorption larger. Set reminders and check the water level a couple times daily for the first week and refill if needed. If you have space in your home, it's fun to put a tree in the smaller rooms as well. Get a mini-tree for the kitchen, bathroom, or bedroom, and get it to match with the theme of its surroundings.

Fake snow - Instant snow can be so much fun, it doesn't melt and can produce many hours of joy.

The big snowman - Why not make a snowman right in your living room this time? You have two options - either you can use fake snow or paper, glue, a couple cheap inflatable balls and white textured paint. The rest is up to your imagination!

Lights Instead of mimicing the presentation of a Christmas store, think about using lights with slow transitions and new colours that will accent the best features both outdoors and indoors as well. Often it's just the matter of changing the light bulbs or use suitable coloured sheets.

Candles - Candles are an element which shouldn't be missing from any Christmas decoration. The easiest way to make them more attractive and personal is to get blank candles of any colour and use three dimensional textured paint.

Christmas garland - Garland is one of the best tools to cover door frames, window frames and the edges of mirrors with. Don't forget to secure the decorations with tape or something similar.

Reusing Christmas cards - You can cut out elements from Christmas cards, old or new, and put them on various items, such as curtains or tablecloth.

Bells - Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the bells. With ribbons, you can tie them together and knot at the top. Drape the bells over a door knob, this way they'll ring every time as someone enters or leaves. Watch out, it might get a tiny bit irritating after a while!

As always, there are no limits for your imagination! Christmas is a great excuse to entirely change the feel of your home. It will not only bring a little variation but will affect you and your family's mindset - which can result in stronger bounding and many wonderful memories that you will never forget.

Romantic Country Bathrooms Decorating -- Get an Authentic Look

Bring a touch of luxury and romance to your bath time -- create a romantic, country bathrooms decorating scheme. A country bathroom is beautiful and timeless -- and you don’t have to live in a country home to make it work.

The center-piece and focal-point for your romantic country bathroom should be a free-standing bath. These can also be known as a roll-top bath, or, alternatively, a slipper-bath, which is slightly higher at one end. If you have the space, position your free-standing bath in the center of your room. Remember to pay attention to any exposed pipework, which might show up beneath your free-standing bath.

If you can fit a circular shower-rail above your free-standing bath, with pretty floral, or lacy, shower curtains draped over either side of the bath, you will really add to that beautiful and relaxed romantic country bathroom feel.

Another vital element for your romantic country bathroom is some wood paneling. Tongue-and-groove wood paneling is the ideal option. Use the genuine article, or buy MDF sheets, pre-routed out in a tongue-and-groove effect. A wood finish, particularly a pine finish, will tend to look a little old fashioned these days -- unfortunately, that’s old fashioned in a bad way!

To get the beautiful, subtle, relaxing look which you are after, try painting your tongue-and-groove paneling instead. Paint your tongue-and-groove in white or pastel colors -- creams, lemon, dusky pink, dusky blue, grays, stone colors, mint green, aqua or lilac, are all good colors to create a pretty, country feel. Go for muted and pastel tones of all these colors -- avoid anything to fresh or bright, you don’t want to end up looking like a sweet shop! You can safely use all these colors in any size room, as they will all be suitable for decorating small spaces.

Simplify and unify your space, by painting the tongue-and-groove paneling all in one color. Or, why not decide to make a feature out of your tongue-and-groove. Paint the tongue-and-groove in white, to contrast with your pastel colored walls. If your bathroom is small, stick to a darker color on the tongue-and-groove paneling, and choose a paler shade of the same color, or a paler, different color, for the top half of the wall. This will help to stop your small bathroom feel too imposing.

Try and include some floral patterns in your country bathroom too, for a really feminine, romantic country bathrooms decorating touch. Look for pretty curtains or blinds, a floral shower curtain, shower-caps and wash-bags.

Include a wooden toilet seat -- this is one case where pine will actually be fine -- but just remember not to over-do the pine in the rest of the room. Also try wicker storage baskets, for a practical solution to bathroom clutter, with a genuine country feel.

Buy some pretty ceramic accessories, such as soap dishes, toothbrush holders, light pulls, tap handles and toilet flushes. Add some soft fluffy towels in pastel colors -- hang them on wooden pegs in your bathroom, to complete the romantic country bathrooms decorating style.

Add some romantic scented candles, relax back into a lovely deep bubble bath, lie back and enjoy your country bathrooms decorating look.

How to theme Interior Design - use a furniture wholesaler!

What's a movie without a title?

What's a speech without a theme?

Don't let your interior design become a skeleton without a spine!!

The theme
In interior design, we must wrap the warmth and vitality your home gives you and your guests around a strong, flexible but well-connected theme - a true design for interior design.

Depending on the feel you like to surround yourself with, interior design takes on many different themes. This is a good thing. I've seen a lot of homes that use furniture and homewares based on their designer's/owner's travels - from that quaint cafe they remember in Bali to the lobby of a five-star island resort. The good thing about wholesale design is that it doesn't have to cost five-star prices. Special moments also rank highly, like the little garden setting they got married in. Between the furniture and homewares, solid inviting themes are easily achieved.

Martin Luther King mentioned free and freedom 24 times in his short speech, and the memorable backbone - "I have a dream" eight times. We must ask 'what does our home say?' I have a dream, I have a vision, I have a wish...? It just wouldn't have stuck!

Furniture
Let the furniture that is the foundation of the living in your house be a constant support to the look and feel of your design, not an ad hoc collection that is uncomfortable to wear with your eye and easy to forget in your heart.

Note: Outdoor furniture is often overlooked in selecting a theme for home design.
Caution: Nurseries are not outdoor furniture wholesalers.
They are nurseries, and as the name suggests, they nurse flora. Go to an outdoor furniture wholesaler for outdoor furniture that is truly in style, themed, and in line with your indoor furniture theme.

So, well-themed interior design starts with a good furniture wholesaler that can cater for all your needs. In compiling this article we used a furniture wholesaler in Sydney which, without selling to the public, does cater for non-retail outlets as well as retailers.

Homewares
Once the furniture skeleton is laid, the muscle that both binds and drives your design will be like the keywords that dot your home - free and freedom did it for Luther, and they're a dime a dozen in the dictionary... so what do we need? You guessed it, a good place to buy wholesale homewares.

This may or not be the same furniture wholesaler you started with but let's not sacrifice design for convenience of a one-stop shop - the fact is only a very good furniture wholesaler will be able to provide quality classy indoor furniture, outdoor furniture, and wholesale homewares under the one roof. Nonetheless, check the wholesale homewares at the furniture wholesaler we used and see how easy it can be to keep your theme strong; when you've found a good wholesaler that is.

Whether or not Luther's dream of freedom has truly been realised, your interior design can and will make your home homely, inspiring and comfortable, if you STICK TO THE THEME!

About the Author: Damian Barry is really an interior designer, although he wouldn't be offended if you called him an outdoor furniture wholesaler and praised his collection of wholesale homewares. He's also pretty short.

Wireless Home Security Alarm System - Quick And Easy To Install

Wireless home security alarm systems are all the rage with ‘Do it Yourself’ home handy persons. The DIY handy person is much more able to cope with the installation of a wireless home security alarm system because it so much simpler to install than the traditional type of wired security devices. The set backs to a conventional wired system from the home handy persons perspective is the large amount of drilling required, which is time consuming and dirty work. Typically, the wired security system is left to the professional, while a wireless home security alarm system can be easily installed by the homeowner.

As an added benefit with a wireless home security alarm system most of the components can be easily moved to different positions around the home to provide protection where it is needed. This flexibility, however, is offset by the need to ensure that the number of installed devices are within the maximum recommended range so as to allow the wireless home security alarm system to function as designed.

Typically every device connected to a wireless home security alarm system has a built in transmitter. This transmitter is designed to send a wireless signal to the system’s centralised control receiver. It is common that the inexpensive systems are designed to simply sound the alarm when a device is activated by an intruder. However, in the case of the more costly wireless home security alarm systems, they are configured to not only sound the audio alarm but also to indicate which actual device set off the alarm. This extra benefit is especially useful when trying to identify the cause of a false alarm or in figuring out which actual room holds the potential danger.

Wireless Systems Have Distinct Disadvantages

While the simplicity of installation ranks high on the list of positives for a wireless home security alarm systems, there are some quite obvious disadvantages with this style of security system. One such negative is the fact that the transmitters in wireless home systems operate on batteries and this means they have to be regularly checked to make certain they have adequate charge and will operate when needed. Power in the batteries can be saved by installing motion sensor cameras, but regular checking and maintenance is still required. If the batteries are not regularly checked the power source weakens, this in turn affects the distance that the signal is sent and can cause false alarms to occur.

The actual material the house is constructed of can also markedly affect the distance that an alarm signal is able to travel. Many wireless home security alarm system devices are designed to emit their signals quite a distance, often between 200 and 300 feet. Sometimes the signal has trouble penetrating very thick walls and this can significantly reduce the distance that the signal is able to travel, often resulting in a reduction of up to 50 percent of the designed distance. In these circumstances the wireless home security alarm system may still function correctly, however, its performance is hampered because the signal cannot effectively reach the central control receiver, which then reduces the system’s effectiveness.

If you are unsure as to which wireless home security alarm system you should install then it is advisable that you seek the advice of a professional security system consultant for guidance.

Bath Cabinets

A dash of class with stylish bath cabinets

Are you an individual who likes to experiment with décor? Is your home a style statement in itself?

If you want to add a signature of your style and class in your bathroom, then there is no better way to do it than with bath cabinets. Glass, wood or steel name it and you will find it in a bath cabinet.

You can experiment beyond limits and create a bathroom that you can be proud of. Consider your bathroom to be a personal retreat where you can go and sink away your stress with a hot bath.

Do not look at it as a utility room where you simply go to perform a chore once or twice a day.

Ideas

When it comes to bath cabinets, you will never really run short of ideas. Glass cabinets have several elegant designs but if you want to experiment, then you can try wicker or bamboo. There are porcelain cabinets as well but these are very heavy and are not recommended.

A lot of people only look at the aesthetic appeal of the cabinet and compromise on the utility aspect of it. But you should never neglect the utility of a bath cabinet.

With a little bit of research, you can easily strike the right balance in aesthetics and utility.

Priorities

Eventually it all comes down to priorities. While some people want to have an extremely lavish setting in their bathroom and have leather coated vanities with high quality polished metal finish, there are others who are looking for an economic deal.

Work out your priorities and then zoom down on a few choices. Keep the design and setting of your bathroom in mind and try to visualize the bathroom with the new cabinet.

The cabinet should look natural and blend with the rest of the bathroom design. It should not look like an entity and stand out.

Life is a Stage - So is Your Home!

What is a home staging?
Home staging prepares a home for sale, and for the dozens of enquiring eyes that will be scouring the property looking for flaws. It creates an image of the perfectly decorated home, in move-in condition. This should be the next step after decluttering, cleaning and repairing your home. The changes may be as small as rearranging furniture to give the illusion of more space, or repainting with more neutral and soothing colors. Home stagers will offer great ideas for perking up a room with accessories and creating a new stylish look for your home

Why stage your home?

In this day and age, having to deal with a sluggish market, staging is a must. It can give you the edge that may result in a faster sale or a higher sales price.

First impressions can make or break the sale of the house, and a home that is properly staged helps to maximize your chances of a positive first impression.

Your home will have an advantage over other unstaged homes.

A staged home shows well in web site marketing and video tours, and since the majority of homes are chosen over the internet, this is a vital form of advertising.

Tips for staging your home.

As you go from room to room, there should be a flow to your home. Avoid overly bright or bold colored walls. This may mean repainting some or all of your rooms with more calming, neutral tones. Some people cannot understand that that bright purple wall can be removed with a coat of paint, and these distractions may result in no sales.

Clean the carpets

Furniture: The most common trick used by stagers is to rearrange furniture to create a more stylish look. During my house sale, my stager suggested I move my dining room table into the living room, creating a living/dining room. This freed up space for my crammed kitchen table and voila, I had a brand new and improved living space.

Rearranging may also mean reducing the amount of furniture so that a room looks more open. This includes emptying out closets, even if it means putting some things in storage. Consider renting a few pieces of stylish furniture or pieces of art.

Tidy up your bookcases so that they look pleasing to the eye. This may mean packing away many of your books and keeping out the ones that display well.

Brighten the house up by cleaning windows, and go with higher wattage light bulbs (just until the home sells). Make sure that the lights are left on before an open house, so the prospective buyers are walk into well-lit rooms and hallways.

Creative use of fabrics as accent pieces for additional texture and color are very common.

Remove family pictures, hockey trophies, any traces of everyday family life. You don't want the buyer feeling that they are in someone else's space; they need to imagine their family living in this house.

Use plug in room fresheners, especially to mask pet and smoking odors. If you can't get rid of a smell, overpower it by providing a distraction such as baking chocolate chip cookies and leaving the tray in the oven.

Sweep out the furnace room and clean the cobwebs off the furnace. If the furnace looks cleaner, it appears newer.

Make a list of general repairs, and if you can't complete them, hire a handyman to polish them off.

Add fresh or silk flowers to many of the rooms.

Kitchen:

Display bowls of colorful fruit.

Apply oil to cabinets to revive their finish.

Modernize your cabinet handles.

Clear everything off the counters, finding homes for small appliances - you'll love the look.

Remove fridge magnets and small area rugs.

Have a table set for use, complete with place mats, place setting and napkins.

Bathroom:

Have a set of thick and luxurious towels reserved only for open houses.

Fill baskets with scented soaps and lotions.

Use a scented plug in air freshener.

Remove the collection of shampoo bottles from the tub, or toothbrushes lying on the counter.

Bedroom:

Clear off your night tables, maybe leaving out an interest looking book.

Outdoors:

Place containers of flowers on the patios, decks and entranceways.

Set the table with colorful picnic plates

Power wash the outside of the house, patios and walkways.

Freshen up the paint on all porches and doors

Weed the gardens and apply mulch; it makes them look like new.

In order to make your home staging a positive experience make sure you use either a realtor who is skilled at home staging, or a professional home stager. The latter is a trained designer and they understand how to create a mood or illusion for the buyer.

Bestow Some Beauty in Your Bedroom Furniture

Ah, the bed: my favorite piece of furniture. The couch is a close second, but that’s for another article. The bed is where you sleep, where you curl up with a good read, where you snuggle up to, where you do other PG-13 rated activities that cannot warrant discussion here. If the heart is where the home is, then my heart lies snoozing somewhere in my rumpled sheets. So why do so many people completely disregard the bedroom as an epicenter for taste and quality furniture?

Bedroom furniture, unlike living room or dining room furniture, is not on display for guests; it’s a private sanctuary that we escape to after a long day’s work. But just because it’s yours doesn’t mean it deserves lesser treatment. Choosing aesthetically pleasing bedroom furniture is easy with the right look in mind.

What is it that you want to come home to every day? Maybe you prefer the sleek, modern styles of contemporary bedroom furniture. If you’re on a budget, but still want to pay homage to your sleeping vessel, a new platform bed is a stylish and inexpensive way to improve your bedroom’s look. These low-profile pieces feature crisp, clean lines and smooth finishes, with few designs on the headboard. Instead of using a box spring, they use slats that run across the width of the bed. Or perhaps you prefer a traditional take with intricate details. Canopy beds exude a classic style with top enclosures for flowing fabrics to let light in or close it out. Whatever you choose, it should make you feel oh-so-good when you sink into it at night.

Forget what you used to think was acceptable—your bed ought to have the best you can afford! Transform your bedroom from a lackluster sleeping space into your own exclusive napping paradise. Bestow some beauty in your bedroom furniture, and start enjoying how good-looking your bed just got.

Extra, Extra! Platform Beds All the Rage in the Bedroom!

If the public still went to “movie houses” and watched newsreels, they would have seen a clip about platform beds by now. Someone, or maybe a family, would be seen gathered in the furniture department, jumping all over the beds on display. A disembodied voice with an old-timey accent would be telling you how these beds are transforming homes everywhere as people wave happily through a sepia-finished lens. Or maybe not, considering how modern a platform bed is. Maybe everyone is already aware of the benefits a platform bed. If you don’t, read on (if it makes you happy, read this aloud in an old-timey accent for kicks).

As a great addition or replacement to your bedroom furniture, platform beds are an affordably easy way to give new life to the same old look. Its sleek appeal and Eastern influences make it the perfect centerpiece for a contemporary bedroom set. A low profile sets the bedroom apart from more classic furniture fare, and gives you a different aesthetic—one that says I’m not like every other French country or colonial bed out there. I’m a platform bed: sleek, smooth, and utterly sophisticated.

What really sets the platform bed apart is its use of wide, wooden slats to hold up the mattress. The horizontal surface below supports the mattress without the aid of a box spring, using wood, metal, or other flat surfaces like plywood. This in turn saves you money, since it doesn’t need the box spring. The bed rests on the slats and gives you the smooth, cutting edge look you want. Take a nap after a long day, or catch up on the daily news in bed, or have an impromptu pillow fight. In a platform bed, anything is possible.

You may want to hang on to some furniture because, well, it’s traditional, but let’s face it—you need a fresh start. Out with the old, in with modernity! The sharp lines and geometric proportions lend an understated, breathtaking elegance. Stop being such an old-timer; take a look around at platform beds for a quick update on your bedroom furniture.

Decorating Kids' Bathrooms -- Say Good-Bye to Bath-Time Tears

Decorating kids' bathrooms is not, actually, as simple as you would expect. You will want to create a space that is appealing for your kids to spend time in, and practical too. Let’s aim to put an end to those bath-time tears.

The best idea is to create a neutral base for your decorating plans. Pick a standard, white bathroom suite - nothing too old-fashioned and traditional, but equally, nothing that stands out as too modern. Also pick white, or neutral, tiles. Your kids will grow up quicker than you think. A decorating scheme that is perfect for tiny tots, will soon appear childish as they grow a little older. With a neutral bathroom structure, you can easily and cheaply get a whole new look, whenever you want.

For toddlers and small children, try to make it simple for them to learn how to use a bathroom. Get a small step for the toilet and basin, so tiny tots can reach easily - they will soon be learning how to do it on their own.

Make sure taps can be turned on and off easily, so they are user friendly for your kids. Also consider installing a push-button flush toilet. Can’t you remember being a kid yourself -- and trying to get the hang of that tricky flush-handle?

Creating plenty of storage in your kids’ bathroom is a must, whatever the age of your children. Toddlers are surrounded by nappies, creams, powders and heaps of bath-toys, while teenagers can really accumulate those toiletries. Choose baskets or boxes without lids -- that way there is more chance that they will actually be used! Keep storage boxes and baskets within easy reach. It is also a good idea to keep a shelf free near the basin or mirror, for those few items in constant daily use.

Safety is of vital importance when decorating kids’ bathrooms, so remember, water and electricity do not mix! Always make sure that you use the correct light fixtures in your bathroom. And don’t forget -- little kids in baths, splash -- a lot! Take advice from a professional electrician if you are in any doubt at all.

Now that you have created a safe, practical and neutral basis for your kids’ bathroom, think about personalizing it, with a ‘splash’ of color. Combine your neutrals with a vibrant wall color. Try using your child’s favorite color on the walls. Or, choose from those perennial kids’ bathroom favorites -- bright blues, turquoise, orange, yellow or lime-green. Always use a specialist bathroom paint, which will help to prevent damp and mold growth.

Jazz up your bathroom decorating scheme with stencils, borders, wall murals, wall and tile transfers or stick on tile decorations. Ideal themes for decorating kids’ bathrooms are boats, lighthouses, fish, mermaids, starfish or flowers. Carry your theme on, in your choice of accessories, too -- shower curtains, towels, soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, light pulls etc.

Get as creative as you like -- and have fun! You have created a great framework for decorating a kids’ bathroom. The details can be quickly and easily changed now, as the kids get older, and tastes begin to change.

The Small Bathroom Dilemma

You get up every morning and head straight for the bathroom. It’s the first and last place that you visit every day. If it is cluttered and small, it can seem cumbersome and depressing. If things are hard to find or get to it can be frustrating and make you late for work or other appointments and obligations. If you are stuck with a small space, follow these tips for getting organized and making the space seem larger than it really is.

First, the more floor space that is visible, the bigger the room will feel. Utilize your linen closet. Clear out the clutter and get rid of expired medicines and make-up. Most of us have a drawer stuffed full of old make-up, medicines and hair accessories. Use plastic containers that you can see through and separate your stuff. Put the make-up that you really use in one container. All manicure/pedicure products should go in their own container. Medicines can go in their own box, and if you have children, you may want to separate child and adult medicines. Shaving cream, razors and blades, toothbrushes and toothpaste can go in a box together. Hair-dryer, curling irons and hair accessories can go into their own container as well. Dedicate an eye-level shelf in your linen closet for all of these items. Add a shelf if you need to, making extra space. This should get everything off of your counter.

The next step is to get as much as possible off of your floor. Unnecessary rugs, laundry baskets and garbage cans can make the space seem smaller than it is. If you have the budget, opt for a wall-mounted toilet and pedestal sink. These two things free up floor space and help keep things open. Take down thick or dark colored shower curtains and draperies. Installing clear doors on the shower extends the eye past the bathtub all the way to the wall, adding about three feet of space. Having sheer curtains or a pull-down window shade that lets in light can make a big difference.

Install extra lighting where ever you can. Bad lighting makes spaces seem small and dreary. Bright fluorescent bulbs, recessed lighting, sky lights and open windows can make all the difference. Use light colored paint and bathroom accessories to brighten up the room. Light blues and greens are the most pleasing to the eye and signal your brain to consider the room an open space.

Mirrored surfaces also add to the illusion of space. If you have a small mirror, replace it with one that is as big as possible. Add mirrors to other walls if possible, not just above the sink. A mirrored medicine cabinet adds space and is also a practical solution for storage. Replace old brass doorknobs, cabinet pulls, toilet paper holders and faucets with bright reflective chrome. Towel rods, shower curtain rods and hooks reflect light around the room adding to the illusion of space. If you have a small table in your bathroom, cover it with a mirrored surface, or replace it with a pedestal and glass top.

Keep things simple and open, colors light and patterns subtle. Use wooden hangers to organize your linen closet or hang your robe and keep things looking uniform. Opening up space in your bathroom can rejuvenate you for the day and relax you for the night.

Prepare Small Rooms for Winter

Winter is on the way. The holidays can mean having lots of family and friends over to your house, so it’s time to get your home ready for it. The stresses of the season, winter depression and less daylight hours can all bring you down. Plus if your home is small, you can start to feel trapped and things can get cluttered with all the extra coats, hats, gloves and boots lying around. Start now and turn your little cabin into a cozy little safe-haven that is inviting to you, your family and your guests. Have a warm cozy winter this year. Use decorating tips and lighting schemes to accomplish a stylish, organized environment, even in a small space.

First, get organized. Get yourself some high quality wooden hangers for those heavy coats and start with your coat closet. Organize hats, gloves and scarves in small drawer cabinets or in over-the-door closet organizers. Shoes should be about the only thing on the floor of your closet. Get rid of coats that you never wear and store formal ones in a spare bedroom. You can also use the top shelf of your coat closet to store them in boxes or collapsible bags. Once everything is in place, you’re ready to tackle the entryway of your home.

Provide a bench or cozy seat by the door to invite guests to take off their shoes. A discreet shoe rack or organization cabinet will give everything a place to go and make your guests feel at home. Use warm lighting in this area to make it relaxing and inviting. A small lamp or low watt soft light bulb will do the trick.

If you have a fireplace, you’re in luck. There’s nothing like a fire to warm the spirit and relax the mind. The warm glowing light is perfect for drawing you into its warm aura. Provide seating around the fire and coasters on the hearth for mugs of hot chocolate or tea. If you don’t have a hearth, small end tables on either side will let people know that this is a place where they can sit and relax. If you don’t have room for chairs in this area, decorative floor pillows or fluffy rugs will invite people to sit.

Use upward lighting on the walls to accent family pictures or art. Use downward lighting, like from lamps or hanging lights, to direct people towards areas where you want them to mingle. Use lots of soft textured fabrics to add to the coziness of the area. Throw blankets and plush pillows make any room look more inviting, even if you have stiff leather couches. Busy patterns can make a room look smaller, so stick to discreet patterns and solids when decorating. Dark colors can make a room cozier, but if the space seems small already, make sure that your accents are light and don’t add to the darkness of the space. Large mirrors can open up a space and reflect soft light around the room.

Use your creativity and imagination when decorating your small home. Personalize it to your taste and keep comfort in mind. Making the space usable and less formal will make your home feel like a retreat away from the cold this winter.

Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

When you think about Ideas, what do you think of first? Which aspects of Ideas are important, which are essential, and which ones can you take or leave? You be the judge.

When homeowners decide to do home improvement, they think the bathroom. This is the place where one can get away from all the stresses in life. By redesigning your bathroom cabinets, sinks, bath tubs or even the floor, you can turn your bathroom into a newly designed retreat where relaxation and unwinding is the ultimate experience.

The bathroom is the most used room in the house so it should seem that it is the most remodeled room. After a certain period of time owning a home, the bathroom becomes the most boring even if nothing has been done since you moved in. Most likely your bathroom is the standard white sink, white tub, and white toilet. Now there are many bathroom renovations ideas to choose from such as a spa bath, fog free mirrors, a warming bathroom floor to name a few. Install a new shower faucet with an anti-scald pressure regulator - remove the scenario where someone flushes the toilet and out comes scalding water from your shower faucet. Replace crumbling tile in the shower stall with a maintenance free shower surround. Grab bars in the shower, new water-saver toilet and/or a new whirlpool tub. You can go from a small bathroom remodeling design project to a major bathroom renovation. The size of the project will depend on the size of your budget and the amount of inconvenience you want to have. Remodeling a bathroom can be expensive. The average cost of a full renovation of a bathroom when hiring a contractor is about the same as the cost of a small car. By doing part or all of the remodeling work yourself, you can save thousands of dollars. While making a decision about bathroom remodeling, remember that in most recent years homeowners were able to recoup approximately 85% of their costs upon sale of their home. This recovery is when a professional remodels the bathroom.

If you base what you do on inaccurate information, you might be unpleasantly surprised by the consequences. Make sure you get the whole Ideas story from informed sources.

Some professionals consider small projects consisting of replacing the tub with a new tub or a shower unit. If this is what you are considering for your bathroom, you will need to include the flooring in your plans. Most new tubs or shower units will not cover where the old flooring conformed to the old tub. This work will involve removing fixtures (toilet, etc.) which will cause labor costs to rise. A project like this is okay but most homeowners usually consider a medium to large remodeling project for the bathroom. For these projects you want to plan very carefully so you will be happy with what you end up with after the project is completed. You will want to make sure that you have extra facilities to use while the remodeling is in progress. Your plans should include the fixture placement, i.e. do you keep the old layout or create a new one? What type of lighting do you want? Do you want task lighting at every functional area or general lighting throughout the bathroom? Do you want a bathroom heating system to keep you warm when you get out of the shower (i.e. floor warming system)? Do you want greenery or how about a HiFi television for your bathroom? Fog free mirrors? No more waiting for steam to clear before you can see yourself! Plan carefully and within your budget! When the project is completed, enjoy the new room you designed for you and your family!

Sometimes it's tough to sort out all the details related to this subject, but I'm positive you'll have no trouble making sense of the information presented above.

In the highly active – and challenging – area of home improvement, a washington business will be successful if the assistance it can offer to the homeowner set to alter his house to a higher degree is able to match the high degree of expectations of our homeowner. What do we mean by assistance? Basically, it is supposed to offer the client all the valuable and competent home improvement premises, on account of which he could make a selection.

After the selection is operated, the homeowner will also be spared from the troubles that an improvement design can generate, in the case where the targeted transformations must be accomplished on more than one level. Now, the many advantages of home improvement md services are displayed online. For instance, browsing a page like http://www.welcomehomewashington.com/cat_result.php?cat_id=2, each homeowner determined to make some improvements to his bath or kitchen will find there the information he needs for reaching whatever home improvement washington business he considers best in the domain.

However, home improvement does not stop at the tiles added to the kitchen or the new paint in the bathroom. On the contrary, an entire array of services is available, as you can clearly notice on http://www.welcomehomewashington.com/cat_result.php?cat_id=14. Subsequently, home improvement md is functioning on as many levels as the clients require. Let’s look for a few moments at what’s happening in the mind of a potential client before requiring the home improvement services of a specialized washington business.

Well, basically, all of the homeowners’ concerns will most often be accumulated under the form of a more or less organized enumeration founded on two categories. Let’s label them, in an attempt to largely comprehend them, as “needs” and “fancies”. Obviously, our first category will center on what is a must for home improvement, while the second will focus on what could provide the homeowner with just some pleasure – most of the times, at the visual level. In simpler words, we are talking about the utility and the decorative purposes of home improvement. A reliable washington business in the domain of our concern will certainly comply with the demands of the client.

Therefore, to continue with our enumeration, the client will have his thoughts wander along all imaginable and unimaginable levels of home transformation. From tile and flooring to patching, paint, roofing, plumbing, heating, and decorating, home improvement md services need to cover them all. It is not uncommon for the homeowners to come to require the assistance of home improvement washington business services with some of the most imaginative and, at the same time, most demanding, home improvement plans. When you look at the entire matter more carefully, you will notice that it all becomes connected to one particular approach: visualization.

In consequence, homeowners will “see” their homes under the most various “fashions”. While some houses are kept simple, with a touch of a more traditional manner of construction and decoration, others are thought of in modern, ultra-modern and even surprisingly hyper-modern terms. The good thing is that home improvement md services can adjust to all of the clients’ requirements. They are equipped with both the material and the skill to do it. And while to the homeowner it may take days to obtain the full inventory of the proper materials they need, let’s say, for basement insulation, an expert will necessitate a significantly smaller time interval, since he already has the experience and only needs to operate an estimation of the amounts of material he needs and of the sum total of money you will have to pay for the accomplishment of the adequate home improvement services.

In the end, it is all intended to fit the better interest of the homeowner. This means that any home improvement md expert will take care that the place he has been given for “refashioning” will become a genuine enjoyment to live in. It is the only competent manner that can match all homeowners’ beautiful expectations to what concerns the final appearance of their homes.

About the Author: Homeowners who aim at turning their house into a truly warm, intimate and original home will find the best help with home improvement washington business services. Home improvement md assistance will be there to match the homeowners’ expectations.
