A good foundation is essential for all measures other than those of cycles logs. The foundation should extend six inches below the frost line.

Although not always the most attractive of concrete is a material commonly used for the stages. A simple form can be constructed from a series of boxes LX6 and LX8 inch saw timber, each box is the same width of four inches, but shorter than the box the lower step. The boxes are placed one on another and held together by studs. Make sure the corners well aligned. The cement is poured to 1 part Portland cement to 3 parts of sand 6 parts gravel. Then, the peaks of the same measures with the flat side of a plate.

Using pre-cast concrete blocks eliminates the need for forms for step construction. Bathroom Remodeling Ideas

Lighten up

Bathrooms are often cramped and undersized. In most cases, it is not feasible to really enlarge the room, but a color change can provide for a virtual expansion. Bright colors are hot and popular but any light color will make your bathroom feel roomier. Even if you are not looking to expand, treat your bathroom to a fresh coat of paint.

Work miracles with hardware

If your cabinets are in good shape all you need to do is replace your cabinet handles with new trendy knobs to give a fresh new look. The same effect occurs when you replace faucets, towel bars, soap dishes, or any other outdated hardware. Swapping your shiny brass hardware with up-to-date fashionable pieces does miracles. Hardware changes often make the biggest difference without costing much.

Feed your Vanity

A whole new look can be achieved by simply changing vanity cabinets or maybe install a pedestal sink. Your local home improvement store should have several styles and online stores generally have even more options. Most varieties are sold for less than $500 and this is a small price to pay for a big change. A change in mirrors will also bring a new look. There are so many fun and unique mirrors out there that can really spruce up the vanity and showcase your personal style. Make your new vanity complete with new light fixtures such as sconces or a fixture with chic frosted or marbled glass. Make sure your new fixtures are bright enough to do your make-up correctly but not blinding. Also, look for fixtures that use environmentally friendly bulbs.

Accessorize, Accessorize, Accessorize

This is your opportunity to go crazy at the home decor store. Find fun accessories that you like within your color scheme. Remember that everything doesn’t have to match in color or pattern; things just need to coordinate with each other or include a hint of a common accent color. Make sure that most of your accessories have function rather than just take up space. You can do this by finding unique toothbrush holders, hand towels, soap dispensers, clocks, and wall hangings.

Clean up after yourself

Eliminate the cluttered feeling by installing an attractive wall cabinet or storage unit. This way you will be able to hide all the unsightly products you’ve collected but can’t seem to give up. And remember to clean up everything yourself. An uncluttered space gives the illusion of a large and spacious room.

Be a copy cat

If you are still feeling unconfident about your decoration abilities, remember it is okay to cheat. Find something in a magazine that you like and copy it. There is no shame in creating a beautiful room, even if you did see it somewhere else first.

Now that you have the tools and the know-how to remodel your bathroom without knocking down a single wall, go for it. Have fun and get in touch with your creative side. After you’re done, you’ll have a room that you’ll never want to leave.

How To Install Pergo Flooring

Pergo flooring is specifically designed with a unique tongue and groove system to make installation easy and accurate. You can do it yourself or have a professional install it for you. Your retailer can recommend a professional installer. But if you are thinking about installing Pergo flooring yourself, you will probably find following information very helpful.

First, you need to figure out exactly how much flooring and accessories to buy. You can do this by using a room size calculator that will help you determine the amount you will need. Pergo is a complete flooring system and all the items you will need are available to you from the retailer that sold you the flooring. You will need the following:

1. Pergo Glue (the Pergo warranty dictates that this must be used)

2. Installation Kit (includes spacers and tapping block for tight joints)

3. Pull bar (ensures tight fit in difficult spaces)

4. Under layments (evens out irregularities in sub-flooring and provides sound insulation and heat)

5. Floor clamps (simplifies installation and makes finished floor stronger)

6. Pergo Sealent (secures gap between floor and wall; ensures moisture resistance)

7. Pergo Putty (mends damage that occurred during installation)

8. Installation straps (not required to install Pergo, but simplifies the process).

Pergo floors are for indoor use only and must be installed as a floating floor. The flooring must be installed with sufficient space for movement around the perimeter and must not be fixed to the subfloor. The degree of movement in relation to staircases, pipes, walls and fixed objects must be taken into considered with regard to changes due to humidity and temperature. The expansion difference in normal climates is 1/4”. This is important above all in corners, angles, and openings in doorways, archways, etc.

Pergo products should be acclimated in unopened cartons in the rooms where they will be installed for not less than 48 hours. Allow at least four days or 96 hours for very dry or very humid climates. For acclimation before, during and after installation, the humidity should be 30-90% at the job site. The temperature should be stable and within 15 degrees Fahrenheit of the normal operating temperature.

You can install Pergo above, on or below grade. Install the Pergo planks over Pergo Underlayment Foam or Whisperwalk. If installing over concrete, a Pergo 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier is required. For more information check the sub-floor requirements.

Window Replacement Improves Your Home

All the usual details of durability, attractiveness, and affordability add numerous features that might be found in modern replacement windows. Home improvement companies that offer replacement windows for vinyl windows are starting to offer them at a cheaper price. Different types of coatings have been made to allow for high or moderate solar gain, depending on what you are looking for in your replacement windows. For some caulking, flashing, or sealing on the outside of a replacement window could penetrate water behind the window pane. Luckily, a home improvement loan may make even the biggest window replacement costs seem like less of a hassle when you can make payments over time. Customarily this type of project can be very time consuming, but a replacement window company can really help speed up the process. Customarily this endeavor was very easy to decide, back when there were only a few options in window replacements. First of all the best prices are typically for bargain replacement windows that may not be built well and may not last long.

A number of companies have improved their custom manufacturing processes which actually lower the costs in replacement windows. For many people the decision to replace a window often goes much further than how much it will cost with all the advancements in technology. Home improvement services are everywhere; they do renovations from inside and out, they can also give you a great price for replacement windows. First of all, if you have single-pane windows you'll probably really be happy to know that the replacement window is inexpensive.

Before assuming every window replacement fits any style of window, you should get the measurements of the window that needs to be replaced. Different types of replacement windows, some of which look better than others, can be found for great prices when starting a replacement window project. Some have found that adding insulation around their replacement window helps keep the cool air out during the winter months.Even repairing a few broken windows will create several decisions for the buyer to think about when replacing a window. First of all I have tried several local lumber and hardware stores to see if they had a replacement for a stock window.

Home improvement resources for replacement windows may be found by doing an online search. Everything from interior & exterior custom designed kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom replacement windows. A lot of actual replacement window installations can take 5 to seven business days.

Bedroom Decorating Ideas - Turn Your Bedroom Into A Getaway!

Your bedroom should be one of the most relaxing places in your home. If your bedroom feels disordered, you may not sleep well. Experts suggest mess or reminders of work in your sleeping space will interfere with getting a good night of sleep. These things keep your mind moving, and you may be worried about what you forgot to do, or what you will have to do the next day. You have to design your sleeping space for peace and relaxation. Bedroom decorating ideas are abundant, and your biggest problems might not be finding ideas, it might be narrowing down what you want from a list of things you like.

Bedroom decorating ideas are everywhere. You can find inspiration in magazines, on television, in movies, and even in store displays and catalogs. What you have to do is decide what feel you want for your sleeping area. In most cases, you want a relaxing color. A bright red or yellow might not be the best idea. However, a deep maroon or a very light yellow might be all right. The idea is to make sure the color is relaxing to your eye and not energizing or bright.

There are other bedroom decorating ideas you can consider. If you don’t want to paint, you can choose to go with wallpaper. There are many from which to choose, and what you choose should be to your taste, but again, not bright or noisy. Look for something soothing, elegant, and easy on the eyes. You can find unique wallpaper designs by shopping around. You may not know what you are looking for, but don’t let that stop you. You will know what you like when you see it.

You can also watch home improvement shows like Trading Spaces, or television networks like HGTV to get bedroom decorating ideas. The options are endless, and you may end up feeling overwhelmed. Once you have found three or four ideas you have fallen in love with, turn the television off. If you have too many choices, you will end up having a hard time narrowing it down. Don’t let your selection of bedroom decorating ideas get the best of you.

If you can’t decide and don’t know what to do, you can ask with an interior designer to get bedroom decorating ideas. They will charge you a consulting fee, but it may be well worth it when you really want to do it yourself, but you have no idea where to begin. You can give them a general idea of what you want, and they can design something to fit the space you have, with the look you are looking for. They know how to mix and match colors, patterns, and ideas to make the perfect sleeping space for you.

Ovens. The Right One For Your Kitchen.

Now more than ever because of the different types of cooking methods and the styles of ovens available people are becoming confused over which is the best oven option for them when redesigning or building a new kitchen in their homes. Hopefully the information provided below will help to make the decision on what is the right oven for your kitchen much easier.

Firstly we come to the conventional oven which normally uses either gas or electric (heating element) to provide heat to the oven for cooking food. Unfortunately with this style of oven there seems to be one problem which is that the heat does not always get dissipated evenly throughout the oven and you may find that you can only cook one dish at a time (even if you have the space for more).

Next we come to the convection oven, which uses a fan inside to move the hot air around the oven and this results in a more even heat being dissipated around the whole oven, which means that all the shelves can be used effectively. Another advantage of a convection oven is that they are more energy efficient, not only do they reach the required temperature faster, but they can also be used for cooking at lower temperatures as well. As previously mentioned these styles of ovens have either a fan assisted or fan forced delivery system for dissipating the heat more evenly around the oven. For those ovens that are fan assisted you will find that the heating element/gas flame and fan are separate usually the heating source is at the bottom of the oven and the fan at the back.

Whilst if you have a fan forced oven then you will find that both the heating element/gas flame is surrounded by the fan. In some cases you may even find that your oven is a combination oven meaning it is both a conventional and convection oven. Then there are some combination ovens that are both a microwave and convection oven as well and this has a number of advantages over a normal convection oven, not only can food be cooked quicker in it but you will discover that even less energy is used than a normal convection oven.

Another thing that needs to be considered when looking to purchase an oven for your kitchen is the space where it will be located. Some ovens can be installed in a wall, others under a counter and there are those that are part of a traditional stove/oven combination unit. Then other people will look at just how easy the oven will be to clean. A standard oven will have to be cleaned the old fashioned way (using oven cleaner, scrubbing pad and a good deal of elbow grease). However, if you want you could purchase self cleaning ovens which are provided with a super high temperature setting which is used when the oven is empty and the door is locked. This style of oven will burn off any food left in the oven until it turns to ash and all you have to do is wipe it out using a damp sponge or cloth. But if you don’t want to get dirty, and then consider using your vacuum cleaner to get rid of the ash and dust that has been made. Or it may be you decide to purchase a continuous cleaning oven which has a special surface that helps to absorb and spread out any spills that appear during cooking which can be burned off at a lower temperature. These styles of ovens can be cleaned periodically with just either a damp sponge or cloth just like the self cleaning oven. Unfortunately any larger spills that occur in this type of oven will have to be removed using the traditional method of using oven cleaner and elbow grease. It is wise to clean up any spills as soon as possible else if left too long they will become a permanent feature of the oven.

Creative Window Covering Ideas

There is no simpler or dramatic way to totally transform the look of a room than to change the window coverings. You can do this by buying new Venetian blinds or window shades but probably the cheapest way is to simply change the curtains.

One the least expensive window coverings is achieved by simply removing the current curtain rod and replacing it with a new one. You can forget about buying rails and all that jazz. The simplest and most modern looking window coverings are simply swaths of fabric that hang from pinch clips. Pinch clips are hoops, which like clothespins, grip the edge of the fabric and allow you to hang any kind of drape or material (hemmed or unhemmed) from the curtain rods. One very popular look is to simply buy a very fancy wrought iron or aluminum rod and then hang white hemmed sheets from it that have been hemmed. You still get that romantic billowing look without the expense of spending money on prefabricated drapes. You can also sew your own drapes using any fabric that tickles your fancy, including eyelet, cotton, satin, velvet or sheers. Many fabric stores also sell ropes, tassels and ribbons that can be used as tiebacks for the curtains.

There are also curtains and window coverings available that don't require any type of clip. These curtains come with fabric loops that easily slide along the curtain. These curtains, which come in a variety of designs and fabrics, are very inexpensive but you can also make your own by attaching your own loops to fabric. One handy feature is to have each fabric curtain loop fastened with buttons or Velcro to make the curtain easy to remove from the rod for washing.

You can also make your own window coverings out of specialty papers. These are transparent window blinds that are made from rice paper. Some of these papers are absolutely beautiful and feature details such as glitter, leaves or threads pressed right into mesh of the paper fibers. To make the curtain all you have to do is attach it to pinch clips. If you buy these in the store they are usually quite expensive especially if they are decorated with a motif pattern or a design as they are considered to be a bit haute couture.

Another way to personalize your décor is to paint your Venetian blinds. Simply take a stencil and spray-paint one solid design on the closed Venetian blinds. A stencil of a favorite motif or symbol and a can of spray-paint can also be used to embellish simple roll down blinds as well.

Always remember that your window coverings can help make the style of your room look more casual or more formal depending on what style you use. The more fabric, swags and pleats there are to your curtains, the more formal the room will look. The simpler your window treatment is, as would be the case with rice paper roll blinds or a single sheer hung from a curtain rod, the less formal the entire effect will be.

Don't Forget Your Ladder

A ladder is a very handy item to have around the house. Most people will usually own several different types of ladders. Each type of ladder has a specific use and should only be used specifically for that reason. Using the wrong type of ladder can lead to very serious injury.

The most common ladder is a stepladder. Two stiles are hinged in the middle by an inverted V hinge to allow the ladder be fixed into place. Most modern ladders are made out of aluminum but a few are still made with wood. A stepladder is going to be the ladder of choice for any home projects that take place inside the home.

Painting and wallpapering can be difficult even impossible jobs without a stepladder. If your home has rather high ceilings, it is important to consider how high your ladders is and what step you can safely step onto. Most stepladders specifically state that you cannot stand above a certain step and this should be followed to avoid injury. The higher you are on a ladder the easier it is going to be for you to fall.

Another type of common ladder that is useful in most homes is an extension ladder. An extension ladder is a fixed latter that is divided by lengths that can either be slid together for convenient storage, or they slid apart to it's maximum length. An extension ladder is best used for projects that are very high off of the ground.

Cleaning the gutters of your roof is a perfect example. It is always best for safety reasons to have someone at the bottom of the ladder stabilizing it if you are going to be climbing higher then the mid length of the ladder. Above that point a ladder can become unstable if not anchored properly. Having an extra pair of hands isn't always as option so some ladders come equipped with extra wide supports.

Regardless of the type of project you are doing, always be safe and use the right ladder for the job.

How To Control Ants In Your Home

For many people, summer means preparing for an invasion. Armies of troops come in lines barreling for their houses, ready to attack. No, these people aren’t oppressed people in third world countries; they’re regular people like you facing the smallest of invaders: ants. Ants are great creatures to have outdoors. They are good for the environment and help break down old, smelly rotting stuff so you don’t worry about it, but inside, it’s a different story. Inside they contaminate your food, and can harm you and your children. But don’t fear, there are lots of simple ways to send these tiny invaders back outside and keep them there.

If you find a few ants in your house, you should actually take this as a good sign. This means that these are just scout ants and you can stop them before they can go back to the colony and start the full invasion. These ants go out and find food, leaving a scent trail as they go. They then follow the scent trail back to the colony and tell others to follow and come get food. The best way to stop this from happening is to destroy the scent trail. This way, these ants won’t be able to make it back to the colony to tell others of their find. There are lots of products you can sprinkle on the trail to make it impossible to find. Some suggestions are black pepper, talcum powder, cinnamon, or vinegar (just put it in a spray bottle). Just sprinkle or spray one of these substances on the ants and their track. You can watch them for a minute before you apply while they walk so you know their previous path. Make sure to get the path they have come from.

While it is important to get them out of the house, it’s just as important to keep the ants from coming back into the house. If you can find where they got into the house, apply whatever you’re using (pepper, talcum, etc) on their entrances as well. This will keep other ants from following the trail into your house. When they panic and try to get away, watch where they go; you may be able to find where they got in the house. There are other products you can apply at the entrances to keep the ants from coming in again, including the crushed bay leaves and cayenne pepper. You can also sprinkle these products, or the ones mentioned earlier, in cabinets and near food. This will keep the ants away from the food. Another idea to keep them out is to draw a line along the inside barrier of the house where ants come in. Ants generally won’t want to cross the line. These tactics will keep the ants from coming into the house or at least finding the food. If they don’t think food is available, they will stop looking there.

Along with these tactics you should try to seal your food as well as you can. Ants can sometimes get them into closed jars, so keep those in the fridge if need be. If these tactics don’t get rid of your ants, you can always buy ant poison. Just be sure to buy the right kind for the ants you have. If the correct taste isn’t used, the ants won’t eat it.

If you are selling your home you will find that home buyers wanting kitchen granite countertops will be willing to pay more for your home than if you have ceramic tile or plastic laminate.

Planning out your kitchen granite countertop first involves selecting the right granite color. You should concentrate on the most popular colors. Even though granite tones are usually neutral, you may find that a certain color goes well for your kitchen design.

The next important area is upgrading your cabinet hardware. The handles and knobs should also be of high quality in order to provide good accent to the overall look of the kitchen. Even if you are not replacing the cabinetry having high quality hardware with make those cabinets and the whole kitchen
stand out.

So in planning your kitchen remodeling, just remember that kitchen granite countertops will make a provide a world-class addition and increase the re-sale value of your home.

How Do Central Air Conditioning Units Run, and How Much Do They Cost?

How do you find a good central air conditioning system? The way
that central air conditioners are rated is according to their
seasonal energy efficient ratio (SEER). The seer is a
calculation of the cooling output divided by the power input,
which brings up an approximate climate average. Therefore, the
higher the seer the better the central air conditioner you will
be getting.

What is a good seer number to base on? Many older air
conditioners are going to have a number around six or seven.
However, new standards that will be in effect in 2006 will set
the seer requirement at 13, which is an improvement of 30% from
what it currently is at 10.

What a central air conditioner is doing is cooling and
dehumidifying the air. What the system uses to accomplish this
is a condenser, evaporator coil, and refrigerant piping to
operate. The central air conditioner has a couple different
kinds of units, a split system and a packaged central air
conditioner.

A split system has an actual split system, meaning there is a
separation between the condenser and evaporator. The condenser
and compressor are in a cabinet outside the house, as the
evaporator is in its own cabinet inside. As hot air is removed
and transported to an evaporator coil as a warm liquid, the
expansion of the liquid causes it to cool, thus cooling the air.
If your home has a furnace but no air conditioner, then this is
the way to go.

Another type of central air conditioning unit is a packaged
central air conditioner. With this system, the condenser,
compressor, and evaporator are all in one cabinet placed on the
roof or next to the house. This kind of air conditioner often
includes electric heating coils or a natural gas furnace. This
type of unit eliminates the need for a separate furnace indoors
as the air conditioner and central heater are combined.

The price of getting a central air conditioning unit varies like
everything in life from company to company. Some of the
determining factors include whether you’re getting a 2 Ton
system through 5 Ton system, if you need the compressor
installed on your roof, and where you live. A base price for a
2 Ton system without it being installed on the roof is going to
run around $2700.

If you are looking to upgrade your air conditioner, or get one
put in your home for a first time, there are plenty of places
you can go to look. The good thing about central air
conditioning is that it is quiet and environmentally friendly.
In order to find what kind of air conditioner is best for you,
it is smart to contact a professional. The article link below
discusses certain characteristics to look for to find a quality
contractor.

If you are replacing an air conditioner, you’re going to have to
match the size of the previous one to make sure the unit is not
to big and not too small.

Central air conditioning is going to be more efficient than room
air conditioners. As stated above, they are out of the way
creating a quiet environment, and they are good for the
environment. If you are hoping to save some money, it is
recommended that you buy an energy-efficient air conditioner.
This will reduce the energy that is being used by your central
air conditioner, thus lowering your electricity bill.

There are several different routes that can be taken when
considering whether you want a room air conditioner or central
air conditioner, what kind of central air conditioning unit, and
where to buy from. That is why research and getting quotes from
many places is recommended to ensure that you get the unit for
you at a reasonable price.

Septic System Maintenance Secrets

When you buy a car, you are given an owner's manual with instructions on how to care for your car. Septic tanks can cost as much or more than a car, unfortunately nobody gives you a manual when they are installed. Some people don't even know they have a septic tank! As a result, many septic systems fail unnecessarily.

The Price for Failure is Steep
The price for failure is steep in two way. More than 1200 people in the US die each year from contaminated water, and failing septic systems are a leading source of waterborne disease outbreaks in the country today. In a 2000 EPA report, 31 states listed septic systems as their second greatest potential source of groundwater contamination. Septic system replacement is also very expensive, with costs often running from $5,000 to $20,000 or more. Fortunately, there are some highly effective, ineffective steps you can take to eliminate this problem. Before discussing solutions, let's look at why septic systems fail.

Septic tank maintenance is actually pretty easy to understand. When a system fails, the tank itself doesn't fail- the drainfield soil fails. In most cases the soil fails when it gets plugged up with solids and won't allow liquid to pass through it. For example, it can get plugged with solids from the tank if the tank hasn't been pumped, or with lint from a washing machine. Now for your solutions:

1. Use a washing machine filter.

Did you know that washing machines are a leading cause of septic system failure? The primary culprit is lint generated by washing machines, which clogs the soil in drain fields. Did you know that a typical family washing machine produces enough lint each year to carpet and entire living room floor! Lint screens and nylon traps found in hardware stores trap 5% or less of these particles. Because they are so light and small, the lint particles do not settle out in the septic tank. Instead, they stay in suspension and are flushed out to the drain field, where they plug up the pores of the soil bed.

To compound the problem, much of our clothing is now manufactured with synthetic materials such as polyester and nylon. These substances are not biodegradable, and will not break down in a septic system. Instead, they accumulate and plug the soil. Once these materials enter the soil, there is no way to remove them.

The good news is that lint can be prevented from entering the septic system through the use of a reusable, inline filter which attaches to your washing machine discharge hose. The filter, called the Filtrol 160, retails for $139.95.

2. Avoid Excessive Water Use
You can also damage your septic system by doing a large number of laundry loads in a short period of time. In standard septic systems, solid materials settle in the tank, while effluent flows out into the ground. If you put more water into the system than it is built to handle, the high volume of water will flood your system, and can also stir up and flush solids out of the tank into the drain field (in fact, septic pumpers use water from their hoses to help break up solids in your tank before pumping them out). A typical washing machine can use up to 60 gallons of water per wash load. On a heavy day you can easily put 400, 500 or 600 gallons of water through the system in a few hours. The solution is to spread out your water use. Do one or two loads of laundry per day, rather than 10-12 loads on Saturday morning. Water softeners can also damage your system by putting too much water through the septic system. These devices can put several hundred gallons of water down the drain every week, water that is not contaminated and does not need to go through the treatment process.

There are a couple solutions to this problem. You can upgrade your softener with a newer efficient model that uses less water and regenerates on demand, instead of a timer system that regenerates whether you use water or not. You can also install a mini septic system for your water softener.

3. Prevent Solids from Leaving the Tank
First of all, you should get your tank pumped on a regular basis to prevent excessive accumulation of solids in the tank. Under normal conditions, you should have the tank inspected and pumped every 1-3 years. Very important: tanks should be pumped and inspected through the manhole cover, not the inspection pipe. Your septic contractor should also install an effluent filter in the exit baffle of the tank. Effluent filters stop the larger solids from getting out to the drainfield. They are cleaned out every few years when you have your tank pumped. They are usually only about $80. Effluent filters are cheap insurance and along with a washing machine filter, one of the best things you can do to protect your system.

4. Use of Household Cleaning Products
Excessive use of these products can contribute to septic system failure. If you do over 5 loads a week containing bleach, problems could arise. Avoid powdered detergents as they contain plastic fillers that can plug up your lines and drain field. Also, be careful with harsh automatic toilet bowl cleaners, which have put quite a few systems out of commission.

5. Should I Use a Separate System for My Washing Machine?
Some people say you should use a separate system for your washing machine, called a laundry interceptor. However, this is not necessary and in fact undesirable. Washing machines should discharge into the regular system because it actually works better than discharging into its own system. In order to work, septic systems require bacteria colonies which break down biodegradable matter. These bacteria require "food" which is found in our wastewater, but not in detergent. Without "food" these bacteria colonies die out and the system fails. Many people who have installed these systems have found this out the hard way. A research project conducted in several east coast states utilized some rather high tech systems for washing machine discharge and many began failing in as little as eight months.

Septic Tank Maintenance Tips:

· Do: divert surface runoff water from roofs, patios, driveways and other areas away from your drainfield.
· Have your septic tank pumped regularly. It should also be inspected for leaks, cracks and to make sure the exit baffle is in place.
· Install lint and effluent filters.
· Spread out your laundry loads.
· Compost your garbage or put it in the trash

Don't:
· Use a garbage disposal. These appliances normally double the amount of solids added to the tank!
· Flush sanitary napkins, disposable diapers or other non-biodegradable products into your system.
· Dump solvents, oils, paint thinners, disinfectants, pesticides or poisons down the drain as they can disrupt the treatment process and contaminate the groundwater.
· Dig in your drainfield or build anything over it.
· Drive over your drainfield or compact the soil in any way.
· Plant trees or shrubbery close to the septic system, because the roots can get in the lines and plug them. Grass is the only thing that should be planted on or near a drainfield.

If Your System Fails
In quite a few cases, a tune-up can fix your system and you can avoid the high costs of replacing the system. This tuneup includes properly pumping the tank, cleaning (jetting) the drainfield lines, and installing washing machine and effluent filters. If these measures are not sufficient, some failed systems can be rejuvenated by fracturing the soil. This process utilizes a hollow tube inserted into the soil, then a 300 pound blast or air is injected into the soil creating thousands of tiny fissures. These fissures allow the drainfield to drain, creating an oxygen atmosphere and the aerobic bacterial colonies to repopulate. Aerobic bacteria, which require oxygen, typically live in the top 26 inches of the drainfield and process waste much more quickly than anaerobic bacteria. This process can be performed in a matter of hours with no digging or damage to the yard. One company which performs this service is Terralift International.

If you have a clay soil which has become plugged due to sodium from wastewater binding with the clay, Septic Seep can help. These product releases sodium bonded clays and reopens soil, restoring passages air and water. It also has the benefit of dispersing greases and scums that clog the soil.

Let the Home Improvement Season Begin

Spring has sprung, my friends! Let the home improvement season begin! It's been a long winter, and most of us are eager to get our new projects underway. While many of us will be focused on tidying up our yards and getting our gardens ready, indoor home improvements are on the minds of many others.

One of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of your home is to explore your flooring options. There are some excellent flooring products on the market today, and many of them can be had for very reasonable prices. If you are tired of your old, worn out carpets, this article is for you.

While carpet is a popular flooring choice for many homeowners, it is fast losing its appeal. Countless carpet manufacturers claim that their products are guaranteed to last for 15 or 20 years. Anyone with young children can vouch that carpet is not built to last. If you are confident that carpet will meet your flooring needs, be sure to invest in quality carpeting. Be sure to consider your needs closely, and be aware that different carpets are designed for different uses.

The popularity of laminate flooring has literally exploded in recent times. The sheer selection of laminate flooring styles and materials is a testament to the growing popularity of these flooring products. While most people would prefer hardwood floors over laminate, the relative low cost of laminate flooring is considerably more appealing to the average homeowner. Low maintenance and low cost are two key factors in favor of laminate flooring.

There is, however, nothing quite like the look and feel of quality hardwood floors. They are available in countless shades and colors, and they are extremely long lasting. While they may not withstand wear and tear the way other flooring types do, they certainly tend to age better than other flooring options. Harwood floor consumers are an extremely loyal lot. Once you have had hardwood, there may be no going back.

Tile flooring is yet another viable option. The advances that have been made in recent years are absolutely amazing. Ceramic tile flooring can add thousands of dollars to the resale value of your home. The wonderful thing about tile is the freedom that can be had with design and installation. It is extremely easy to clean and maintain, and an absolute necessity for kitchens and bathrooms.

Failing to Protect the Tubing Bends

For decades, in-floor radiant heating systems have been extensively used in Europe. Many people that have chosen a radiant heating system are aware of how comfortable, quiet and cost-effective radiant heat is to operate.

Yet, with poor design and installation of a radiant heat system certain areas of your home may be cold, while others are hot. To ensure that your system will maintain a comfortable and uniform temperature, professional design and installation by a qualified in-floor radiant heating expert is advised.

With radiant heat, uneven circuit lengths, insufficient tube size, improper tubing depths, and poor circuit layout can all affect individual areas, but I find that the most common problem with an in-floor radiant heating system stems from not properly positioning or installing bend protectors.

In fact, that’s what happened to Fred and Deb. They had to tear up part of their flooring because with their radiant flooring system the right side of their home was much colder than the left side.

You see, in larger homes or buildings it is quite common to break down a radiant heating system into three or more zones, each one providing a comfortable interior temperature control.

The proper zoning of a heating element, such as in-floor radiant heat, must take into consideration the size of zones, positioning of zones, direction the room faces, as well as the location of the thermostats for each individual zone.

Similar to all construction, it becomes vitally important to coordinate the trades so that problems are avoided.

With an in-floor radiant heating system, your radiant heat contractor may have designed the system properly. However, the concrete contractor pouring the slab may damage or adversely affect the performance of the system.

As well, many lackadaisical radiant heat installation teams don’t take the care needed to do a suitable job. I hate to say it, but I have personally heard other contractors instruct their radiant heat staff to ignore kinks and rush through jobs, in hopes of a future repair call.

If there is a crimp or blockage it will affect the flow of fluid through your radiant heat line. A crimp will restrict the flow of fluid in the radiant heat tubing and the section of floor following the crimp would not get enough fluid to heat up properly, thus keeping it colder than the other.

That’s why bend protectors become so important. Anytime your radiant heat tubing needs to make a sharp turn, the bend becomes venerable. It’s the bend protectors that safeguard the radiant heat tubes from kinking and ensures that water can continuously flow though them.

Another thing to consider; if your radiant heat lines are not well supported prior to the pouring of the concrete, or are “sagging” between supports, then the thickness of concrete above the lines will vary resulting in a non-uniform heat distribution.

If Fred and Deb had a radiant heat installer that believed in doing the best job possible, chances are they would have avoided the added expense of tearing up their flooring to fix the problem. Although they are now enjoying an even heat distribution, it was a costly error that could have been avoided.

When radiant heat is installed properly, bend protectors will eliminate many of the problems associated with cold and hot spots.

The importance of a Home Security Alarm

Homeland securitization has been given so much importance over the past few years that we have almost forgotten the importance of our own house and the importance of a good home security alarm. While burglary in your property may not make the headlines, it is in your best interest to safeguard property by installing a good home security alarm.

According to the US bureau of Justice Statistics there were 14 million incidents of theft on property and in 83% incidents the burglars had entered the house or building located in the property. You might feel safe by locking your doors and windows but there are ways to enter a house known only to people who commit burglary for living. Burglars always strike by surprise; to underestimate their resourcefulness would be a mistake you would not want to make at any cost.

There are many types of home security alarm, which can help you effectively protect a property, belongings and more importantly your family from burglars. Home security alarm is one of the more trusted methods to protect your house from burglars; a simple home security alarm generally makes a loud sound or dials a number like 911, your cell phone or a neighbor and sends a pre recorded distress message. Some systems connect themselves with the smoke alarms which notify the fire department immediately. Then there is also the monitored house securitizing systems which are considered the safest of all and the local systems which are considered safer than monitored property securitizing systems, yet cheaper.

Many securitizing systems come with a sign board that can be mounted on the door, mailbox or anywhere else where they can be noticed. Burglars generally target un-protected houses and leave alone the houses protected by any type of home security alarm. As for starters, the cheapest home security alarm is the “do it yourself” systems, you need to do all the installation and setup yourself, but if you are on a budget these are the right ones for you. A home security alarm not only helps in preventing burglary but it also helps in minimizing the loss in case the burglars break into a house because they fear a backup or the sound which might alert the neighbors or the police.

Home Office Design....For the Small Office

Working from home is many people's goal. No traffic, no train delays, no office politics. But if you’re going to work from home full or part time, your work area needs to be carefully planned to make it comfortable and functional. By making some simple changes to either an existing office or when planning a new design, your choices of furniture are now possible to create an office space that can blend in to your house, especially when space is limited.

If your office will be in an existing room, such as a living or dining room, the use of a divider of some sorts will allow the room to be used for both purposes at the same time. Modular cube units are idea for this. Mix the cubes so that some face the office and others face the living space. If you prefer something softer, then a screen is a better choice. To save on costs, look for or make a screen using materials that match the decor of the room.

When selecting a desk, look for one that will allow you to close up sections, or the entire desk, with out putting anything away. This will allow you to leave you work undisturbed and be able to pick back up the next day. Also, having a desk that allow you to pull sections out will provide more room to work, when space is tight, and will provide sufficient storage when needed. If adding a desk is not possible and you’re sharing your office in a dinning room, you could use your dinning room table as your daytime desk and add a sideboard or small table with shelves for storing paperwork at the end of the day.

One essential aspect to the work area is lighting. The best light to work with is a directional light that can angle to illuminate your work area. The room should also have good natural light or artificial ambient light during the day or evening, so the contrast between the brightness of the computer screen and the rest of the room is never too great. The use of overhead or wall lights will balance the lighting.

If your work area is shared with another area, it is more important than ever to be well organized. If you do not have a desk to store pens, paper, rulers and every other essential items, consider using furniture like file cabinets that can used to store these items. Shelves can be used for books, box files, and magazines that can be fitted with a blind to hide them when you’re not working.

When looking for a desk that will be your computer work area, make a list of all the computer peripherals that you will be using. Make sure the desk is wide enough to accommodate a monitor if a flat panel monitor is not an option. The monitor should be at eye level for best comfort. If you are thinking of enclosing your PC, be sure there is ample air flow to prevent overheating. Look for a desk that has a low keyboard shelf with a sliding tray that can be pulled out when needed. A good desk will also include shelves for adding other components such as printers, scanners, zip drives and wireless routers. Most of all make sure the chair you choose will be comfortable and adjustable for spending long house in front of the desk. Aim to spend as much money as you can and economize elsewhere.

Having a home office that blends into an existing room is possible without making dramatic changes. Best of all, you can do it without spending a fortune and enjoy working from home!

What Kind Of Heating And Air Conditioning Is Out There For You?

Climate plays a big role in our lives and how we live. Whether
it is a hot and humid climate or a cold climate, heating and air
conditioning allows us to live in different parts of the world
comfortably. In many parts of the world there are seasons that
change the weather throughout the year, making it almost
essential to have both heating and air conditioning.

There are many places you can go to begin looking for what you
need, as well as many different kinds of the products. When
looking for an air conditioner you’re obviously going to want
one that is going to keep the house cool. Air conditioning is
going to remove the heat from your house and reduce the humidity
levels as well. A higher end air conditioner will be a 14 seer
unit, which is its seasonal energy efficient ratio. Many older
units will have a seer unit of 6-9, but many new units sold
today are 10-14.

There are many features to look at when determining which air
conditioner is best for your home. The motor size and how many
blades are on the fan increasing the power are just a couple
features. You can find a 14 seer unit with 850 rpm motor and 4
blades versus a 12 seer unit with only 3 blades. Most air
conditioners can be either placed on your rooftop or next to the
house.

There are different heating methods in order to warm your house
up. You can opt to use a gas furnace or a heat pump. A heat
pump is going to be fueled by electricity and transfers the heat
from outdoors into your home. A gas furnace will keep your home
warm as well, but is fueled by gas or oil instead. Inside a
furnace either gas or oil is in a burner, and the heat produced
passes through a heat exchanger heating the house. The vent
pipe in the home then transfers all the carbon dioxide and water
vapor outside the home.

Heating your home has never been so simple, as there are a
number of routes that can be taken. You can go with a packaged
heat pump or a split system heat pump. There are gas furnaces
or a packaged gas and electric heating unit. Not only are there
different kinds of units, but there are many different companies
that sell different systems for different prices. It is
important to shop around and find the best buy for you, whether
it is through the internet, calling around, or talking to a
contractor.

Just know that there is an endless amount of options when
looking for heating and air conditioning. Heating and air
conditioning is essential to live in your home comfortably, it’s
just a matter of you finding a unit that is within your price
range and one that fits your house best.

Adding a Water Feature to Your Yard

If you feel that your backyard is lacking a certain something, a water feature might be just the thing to bring new life to your outdoors. There are many different types of water features to consider, such as a pond or a waterfall. Flowing or still water has a peaceful relaxing quality to it, and water features allow you to bring this natural beauty right into your own yard. You may be thinking that the care and upkeep of a water feature may not be worth the hassle, but they are much less labor intensive as you may think. By following a few simple guidelines and understanding how your water feature lives and breathes, you can enjoy this natural work of art for as long as you own your home.

Water fountains are considerably easier to deal with then a water garden. Fountains must be regularly cleaned, but really require little upkeep. If you want a successful water garden you will probably need to invest a little more time, especially when you're first trying to get it established. When creating a water garden, it is vital that you understand the relationships between the plants and animals coexisting in this environment. If you want your water garden to thrive, you'll need to take special care to choose the right fauna and flora.

Many new pond owners have problem with algae. If you don't want to be cleaning out your pond every few weeks, adding a few fish can greatly help as can floating plants which help to reduce the amount of sunlight reaching the algae. Ensure you don't have an excessive amount of chlorine in your water, especially if you have fish. You may want to install a pump and/or a filter along with regularly checking the pH level of water (should be between six and eight).

If you're having your pond installed for you, ask the professionals for advice on getting started. If you are still unsure about where to start you can also buy one of several books which can guide you step-by-step through the process of creating your own water garden. Once your pond is established you will likely find the upkeep to be quite minimal.

Many people find that adding a water feature to their yard can literally transform their entire surroundings. Ponds, fountains, and waterfalls add a natural beauty and serenity to any outdoor area, no matter how small or modest.
